Deb, I always think that people who believe they have very little, respond well to being given
something to care for. I was wondering if you could incorporate a class that teaches the use of herbs with a donation from a local nursery of 2 small potted herbs for each of your girls, specifically those that would survive your winter in a sunny window...rosemary, thyme, maybe even tarragon for chicken, for example....and would be appreciated by young folks for their flavours. Oregano would be good but I find it not so useful as a fresh herb.
It is also a way to make the use of herbs really affordable for them on an ongoing basis.
Maybe something like, doing a stew from scratch, rather than throwing everything into a pot of water and letting it look after itself, browning the meat and carmelizing the veg. Then have them note how dramatically it improves with herbs.
