Sharing: Here is what we ended up with for a "Like Water for Chocolate" Valentine's fundraiser

I think it would be really nice for Easter. If this weren't an occasion for organic food,

we might have snuck a drop or two of green food coloring into the curd. Pale green would be appropriate for Easter. For the trial run Gab made a 3-layer loaf cake which sliced up nicely.

And be sure not to cry any tears into the batter--if you've seen the movie you know what can happen.

Have you ever made your own Kahlua Joe? Here's my recipe

that I used while I lived in Saudi Arabia and it is really good. Pretty much like the real stuff without all the $$$. I'm sure you two could finish off the what's not used or just cut the recipe amounts or send the rest to me. ;0) Good job on the event!

Kahlua
5 Cups Water
3 1/2 Cups Sugar
10 Teaspoons Instant Coffee
1 quart cut sid or Vodka
4 teaspoons vanilla

Simmer water and sugar 2 1/2 hours or until reduced to 1 Quart. COOL.
Add 1 Quart Vodka or cut Sid and vanilla.
Makes 2 Quarts.

I didn't know it had been made into a movie. I was able to get my

hands on the book when we were living in Saudi but movies were impossible. Wonder if I can get it now. Were do you all get your movies?

Orchid, they have it on Netflix, which is where we get our movies. The only bad thing about

it is that now I think I will have to definitely play it on the big screen and sit really close with my glasses on so I can read the sub-titles...LOL

When it first came out in 1993, DH and I went to see it at the theater, a little art house type that is no longer there any more. They "improved" the area, tore down the theatre and built a shopping center - like we really needed one more Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf...

I'm told it can be streamed at Netflix. I think that means you can get it instantly.

It was produced in Mexico and they did a wonderful job with it-really maintained the magical qualities. I think Hollywood would have ruined it.

Be sure to see the Spanish language version and not the dubbed one.

Thanks Lisa and Joe. I guess we are going to have to look into

NetFlix. Up until now we've always had Blockbuster but they seem to be closing up. I really don't like change.....

Good to know. I don't drink it, so every time I need it for a recipe I buy a bottle and lose it

at the back of the cabinet. Eventually I have three or four open bottles all crystalized. I could probably cut this recipe down to a small amount when I really need Kahlua.

Now why didn't I think of that? Anyway the flan was really good with rum. I don't drink that either

but I use it a lot in desserts so it doesn't get lost in the back of the cupboard.

That is a great idea Traca! Joe, I love Kahlua so it never goes to

waste with me. In my coffee or milk with Kahlua over ice... Heaven!

l have a small bottle collection for baking: Calvados, Grand Marnier, Malibu, etc.

The whole bottles are expensive and for as much as I use them, not worth the purchase. I keep a collection of small bottles in a box...they're easy to pull out, and make substitutions if necessary. (Let's see...what else do I have?)

a suggestion for next year: A Good Year. good movie, great setting, beautiful grounds. and a cafe
