Slightly Late Weekend Six

Saturday was the St. Patrick's Day parade (I know, a week early due to the Final Four basketball events next weekend) followed by lunch at a nearby Polish restaurant (Eva's) that was featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives the other night. I got the beef pierogies with sauerkraut and DH got the potato pancakes. Had to drag myself away from the dessert case where I could've ordered one of each... they looked so good.

Sunday we went to "Meatball Madness", an annual charity event where you judge meatballs from local Italian restaurants. There were 12 entries, so good they cut them in half. Each came complete with a little Italian toothpick flag. Fun. Of course my LEAST favorite one won, and I still have no idea who was my favorite as they only identified them by number ( (Must find out...) I won a silent auction item for a year-long family membership to paleontology/science museums, so DS will love that.

We were both so full from the event that we just ordered a pizza for the kids and about 7pm I made tuna sandwiches for us...

That's it... very little cooking this weekend...

I had a meatball weekend too!

A restaurant in the touristy Union Square area was offering a Saturday all-day-happy-hour special of their meatball appetizer but sized up and a beer for $9 so I met up with some girlfriends.

The bartender was super cute (and flirty - rawr) and we had a fun afternoon and he comped up our next round of beer. The meatballs were quite nice, a bit too firm, but had a decent meat sauce and a lot of cheese. We could have used some bread or something but it never materialized. After our late lunch/snack/beer thing we all did a bit of shopping at Union Square. If the crowds there are any sign of the economy things are hopping. Saw the new Target at the Metreon and was underwhelmed. Seriously unimpressed with their grocery selection - it was like the top 40 of over processed and packaged foods. uck! I did score 2 Lindt chocolate easter bunnies though. I plan to eat the ears Sally Forth style.

Sunday was nothing much. I slept in, made duck breast with an asian inspired marinade that Susan in Kentfield shared with me. I didn't have a lot of the ingredients but I made do with what I had in the pantry. It was tasty but I got distracted and overcooked them! oh well.

Early to bed because of the time change. I feel nice and rested though, it was a fun weekend for me.

Not meatballs but ground beef weekend.... I had been ill with flu all week..

and after not eating for a few days,I took out a 1 kilo (2.2 LBS>) pkg. of ground beef. Ate hamburgers for 2 days,
then craved something else.So in the morning decided on Mexican and spent time reading several recipes, decided on 1 with the limited ingredients I had available
Lunchtime came - no more desire for Mex. Looking in my
dwindling pantry I found a can of pineapple and felt a sudden desire for pineapple! Made a Hawaiian Chili with
the few ingredients I could manage. Couldn't find the rice although I knew I had plenty so ate it without. Tasty.Next day found the rice and added it..
Sat. feeling better so went to my son's and had wonderful
shakshuka (eggs and tomato ) with home made tehina which was great.
All better now and finished up the pineapple last night with a nice tuna-pineapple salad.
How great it will be to go food shopping!!

Target: I like their chocolate selection. usually have good Ritter selection and Toblerone varieties

Our local Target also has a special deal with a favorite local roaster for killer deals on 12 oz of coffee beans. look for local coffees. may get lucky. and, love the "rahrr" : )

I LOVE tuna and pineapple salad. There was a recipe for it on the Dole chunk pineapple can,

many years ago---it had cucumbers and pineapple and other good things. I still throw together a version of it. so refreshing in the summer.

I also had meatballs this weekend. I have learned that Gluten Free is quite expensive!

A good friend of mine called me on Friday, knowing that we were getting together for dinner and that I was going to Wegmans. She asked me to pick up a loaf of Gluten free bread for her husband, so she can make meatballs... I could not get over the cost! I had alot of other stuff in the cart, so I do not recall the exact $$; but it was between $4.99--$6.99 for a small loaf! I was astounded! I actually asked for help to see what other selections there were. I appreciate that she is changing their diet to accomodate him w/ gluten free, but was surprised at how expensive it could be w/ normal shopping doing a gluten free diet! She did serve her meatballs for dinner, and they were wonderful. BUT, I kept thinking how lucky I am to be able to use 99 cent loaf of bread.

Yes, it is. Our food budget about tripled. She should make her own bread -good recipes available now

I'm pretty sure this is the recipe.

DILLY TUNA SALAD
Printed from COOKS.COM

1 (7 oz.) can tuna
1 (20 oz.) can pineapple chunks, in juice
Salad greens
1 c. cucumber
1/3 c. mayonnaise
1/2 tsp. seasoned salt
1/4 tsp. dill weed

Drain pineapple, reserving juice. Line salad bowl with greens. Toss tuna, pineapple, cucumbers. Pour into salad bowl. Blend mayonnaise, salt, and juice; pour over salad. Sprinkle with dill weed.

I am always so surprised that people go gluten-free when they don't have Celiac's disease, not that

this is the case with either of you. But I've heard from so many people that they think eliminating gluten will make them lose weight. Not so!! Limiting carbs, maybe, because it limits so much of what you can eat so you WILL lose weight, but not gluten!

My nephew has Celiac's disease and so of course his wife cooks everything without gluten, but given the choice, I don't see why people would choose to do it. Any ideas?

It's not a matter of losing weight (altho I would WELCOME that) - its a health issue

I've read so many bad things about wheat and I'm sure that's the reason many people are veering away from it - maybe not the wheat of years ago, but the GMO product of today. When I lay off wheat, my hips and knees feel better. We are just trying it for awhile to see if it makes a lasting difference, but I'm sure there are lots of different reasons out there. Everyone has something to say about it.

My coworker has a wheat allergy, but not to gluten

she get stomach aches etc but also rashes when she eats wheat things. Funny how allergies develop.

I didn't mean you, cheezz ) That's why I prefaced it with "not that this is the case with either"

of you". Thanks for the links though.

I have a friend who is studying to be a nutritional counselor (whatever that is), well really

just an acquaintance who says exactly that. Gluten bad, eliminating gluten, lose weight. I hope she studies more before her finals! ;o)
