So Charlie's post made me think, what are the movies all foodies must see?

Whether it be a food scene or a food movie, what do I need to make sure I have seen?

For me it's the last scene in Woman of the Year where Katherine Hepburn tries to cook for Spencer Tracy.

As for food movies -

Big Night

Tortilla Soup

Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe -- an oldie, but a goodie!

and I loved the end scene in Working Girl when Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith were in the kitchen -- he was fixing her lunchbox and she was making toast.

Food wasn't a theme in the movie, but the preparation of it was analogous to their final relationship. Sweet.

Night At the Opera - the scene where Groucho ordered enough food for an army, and there

was no room for it in the tiny ship's cabin he was sharing with the other two Marx Brothers and the leading man, plus all the other people crowding into it, ie the manicurist, engineer, cleaning woman, 3 of the ship's waiters with tons of trays of food, etc. It was so crowded that when the final person opened the door, everyone flew out, like being sucked up into one big vacuum.

Eat, Drink, Man, Woman.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (but only if you have a REALLY strong stomach--it's a David Greenaway movie, which pretty much says it all).

Ratatouille. Very cute, if you don't think about the rat-in-the-kitchen thing.

I hear they are making a sequel to Chocolat.

Speaking of which, I'm in Florida and saw them at a veggie stand

where I bought some tomatoes and a watermelon yesterday. They have lots of good veggies but I've never purchased nor had fried green tomatoes before. Any recipes would be greatly appreciated as I must try them! Thanks!!

I've been eyeing this recipe for a long time - sounds so good! Fried Green Tomato Sandwiches ....

FRIED GREEN TOMATO SANDWICHES

Ingredients:

4 oz goat cheese, softened
2 tbsp finely chopped green onion or 2 tbsp fresh chives
1 tbsp fresh chopped parsley
1 tbsp fresh chopped basil
1 tbsp fresh chopped thyme
1 tsp finely grated lemon, rind
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, lightly, beaten
3/4 cup coarse yellow cornmeal
4 green tomatoes
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F (160°C)

In bowl and using wooden spoon, beat together goat cheese, onions, parsley, basil, thyme, lemon rind and 1/4 teaspoon (1 mL) each of the salt and pepper. Place flour in shallow bowl; sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon (1 mL) salt and remaining pepper. Place eggs in another bowl and cornmeal in a third; set aside.

Slice tomatoes into sixteen 1/4 inch (5 mm) thick slices. Pat with paper towel to dry. Sprinkle with remaining salt.

Spread heaping tablespoonful (15 mL) goat cheese mixture evenly over half of the tomato slices; sandwich with remaining slices.

Keeping “sandwiches” intact, carefully coat both sides of sandwich in flour, tapping off excess. Dip in egg then coat both sides in cornmeal.

In large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons (25 mL) of the oil over medium heat. Cook 4 of the sandwiches, turning once and adding more oil as necessary, for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden and tomatoes are fork-tender. Repeat with remaining sandwiches, keeping cooked sandwiches warm in 350°F (160°C) oven.

Yield: 4

Well, Dad had what he calls a

mini heart attack. I flew in on Oct. 24th. He's still in the hospital but today is his best day yet and docs expect him to go to a rehab center on Monday where I've already prechecked him into and have toured.... Hopefully, he'll be coming home soon afterwards. Ironically, I was here just a month ago to visit him for a week "on vacation" but that's life for you...

He's 85 and I've done this routine before a few times but so happy he's doing so well after such a downward turn. I'll be here for an undetermined amount of time and will fly back to pick up my pooch Woofus in the kennel in Jersey and stay for a week and drive back to Florida after Dad is able to come home and is settled in for a while.

Thanks for asking.

One of my favorite movies ever is Eat, Drink, Man, Woman. I just bought

it at a Border's clearance for $4. Also Chocolat, Like Water For Chocolate, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Big Night and Moonstruck (one of my all time favorites).
