I store and gift with rings. Easier for me, easier to put a "skirt" on top if desired. Also, in
"the day" folks would pop the lid and put the contents in a jelly dish or some other serving container. Who has that anymore? I keep all the homemade jams I eat in the jars they came in and the only way to reseal for refrigeration is to have a ring so . . . to make a short answer longer, I leave the rings.
(Reason they say to take them off is so you can see if seepage occurs while storing but really, you don't want to see that, it'd make you weep.)
