... thank you for all your virtual support, the event was WONDERFUL!

of all things I made, only the Smoky Eggplant Dip turned out horrible - my first disappointment with a Fine Cooking recipe, I should have made regular hummus instead.

anyway, at some point I will blog on the recipes and the party, but it might take a while, so I leave you with a link to a little album that is pretty much self-explanatory smileys/wink.gif

my favorite appetizer was the carrot dip over cucumber slices, but the Cheddar Cayenne coins were spectacular too

thanks again for all your help and cheerleading!

question about the small cream cheese-chive pancakes

Did you serve them room temperature? if yes may I have the recipe please?

We are having a party for 50 or so this summer with a Mexican buffet (catered) and dessert buffet (moi) and I would like to serve apps (not Mexican) while guests are schmoozing and playing lawn games.

Thank you!

Nice Done! I have never heard of a carrot dip on a cucumber. Very creative. I am sure a lovely

time was had by all! Congrats!

It was my idea....

... I always like to include some light options, as for the most part everything offered in this type of get together is super rich and carb-loaded.

the dip was from American Test Kitchen, made very coarse, just mashed with a potato masher. I blended it to get a smoother consistency that cold be piped, then decided to serve on the cucumber slices and sprinkled with black sesame seeds.

it was quite nice, a contrast of sweetness of carrots with the brightness of the cucumber - everyone was raving about it.

Some great looking recipes -- I could cook from there for a long time and be very happy.

Sounds like she lives in the Rockridge area, my old stomping grounds where I used to do pastry at the restaurant with Elaine. Did you know her when she lived in Seattle, Traca?

THe pancakes....

well, a few things I would have done differently - I would like them to be a bit thinner and more perfectly round, but I would need to make them again, knowing how they behave, maybe there was excessive baking powder, as I doubled the recipe and doubled everything without other adjustments.

but they were inhaled quite rapidly, it was the first item to disappear - I changed a little bit the presentation from the photo, I folded the pieces of salmon in a curved shape instead of laying them flat, but forgot to take new photos

also, the photos of the dates wrapped in bacon turned out HORRIBLE - but they were also delicious, in fact a scientist from the Biology Department told Phil that if he could he would stand by that platter and eat the whole thing as his dinner, but that would be a bit too rude... smileys/wink.gif

I want to blog about the dates, so I should probably make that again for us and try to get better pictures.
You have no idea how horrible the photos turned out.... brown food is my nemesis... (sigh)

and, of course, I would like to sue Fine COoking for the eggplant fiasco, I followed the recipe to a T - oh, well...

LOL! (more)

GUest of honor was absolutely perfect....

he had a super charged day, after a very stressful trip the day before - instead of arriving at 5pm and enjoying a dinner with us and faculty members, his plane was stuck in Dallas during several storms and he landed almost 10pm

we had to resort to plan B and got take out pizza for the three of us at home....

it was one stressful evening, when we were not sure he was going to make it to our town in time for the morning seminar

Still not only he presented two fabulous lectures, but he was a bit of a social butterfly and interacted with everyone on a very pleasant way - some scientists have egos the size of Mount Everest, but Schekman is not one of those.

I must say also that we are glad it is over - it is a huge weight on the shoulders of the host, the pressure for everything to go smoothly, flawless, as much as possible. Phil did a great job handling some curve balls and if the worst part of the reception was an eggplant dip that tasted like wet cardboard or pancakes a little too chubby... it's all good! smileys/wink.gif
