Somewhat FRC. Taking on a pretty radical (for me) shift in eating habits due to my diabetes.

With all the talk about low-carb diets, the timing couldn't be better.

There's a fairly radical school of thought that promotes a "diabetes cure" from a diet that mirrors Atkins/South Beach/South Hampton-type plans. They make the radical claim that you can get off your meds completely and control your blood sugars with diet.

The final straw was receiving a 6-month supply of meds from the pharmacy last week. The bag was huge! I kept staring at it, knowing that my body was going to have to be subjected to what amounts to a "controlled poisoning" and have to deal with all those meds.

I decided I don't want to live that way. Doctor says prognosis is "not great", with higher dosages of meds and, most-likely, insulin injections down the road.

Not if I can help it.

I run 5 miles in an hour, 4 to 6 times a week. I cook. I have control over my eating. I work from home, so I don't have to eat on the run. I can do this, so it's time to get it done!

Thanks for listening,

Michael

good luck."

You can do it! If there is any other way besides poisons, it's worth a shot. I'll be praying for you

You've radically changed your lifestyle once with

Monumental results. You're intelligent and determined. You can do it!

Michael, sounds like you have done your homework, thought this through,

and have a very obtainable goal. I know you can do this as you have already lost the weight and have the determination to be successful! Best of luck to you.

I do know how you feel. I am genetically ripe for Type 2 and am determined not go down that road. I try very hard to maintain a healthy diet and I workout for an hour+ almost everyday. Part of my motivation comes from being terrified of becoming Type 2....... My mother passed at 58 from Type 2, only a couple of years older than I am now and I have different plans!

Good luck Michael...

I have been taking hypertension medication for 12 years. With the recent weight loss, my Dr. had to reduce the dosage by half because I was being over-medicated. I'm very hopeful that I can quit taking it all together sometime this year with additional weight loss.

I took 20 mg per day when I was 306 lbs. I take 10 mg. now, at 230.

Keep on track, and we'll both be off the meds!

Thanks for the encouragement.

Michael

It works Michael--a good friend recently got off all of his meds by

switching to low carb.

He looks and feels great.

I did it. You can too.

97 lbs off and off ALL meds. I was pre-diabetic, had all kinds of other stuff going on. South Beach and I made it happen. I changed completely the way I eat and in 9 mo it was all off me.

That was 5 years and 5 months ago that I hit my goal. At 64 I feel like I'm 30. I gained 15 lbs back but it is good because I was too skinny.

If I can do it you can too.

My ideal weight is around 220 to 225. I'm 6' tall and athletic, so when I...

...hit under 20% body fat, I'll still be fairly heavy. It's a lean, mean "heavy" though.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have to lose all the starch, and I love starchy foods (surprise, surprise!). But, I also love greens, chopped salads and lean protein, so I should be able to shift my paradigms well to low-carb.

I went from 306 to 230 by cleaning up the diet and getting away from fast foods and processed foods. I eat clean protein, whole grains, lots of veggies and some fruit. I drink lots of water and try to stay away from sugar. I think by cutting the starch I should be able to get off the meds completely.

Thanks again,

Michael

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the kind words of encouragement. I like the idea...

...of being in control of this thing called "health" and not being in bondage to meds.

Michael

Awesome. You can do it! One of the biggest things for me....

...was to get rid COMPLETELY of all sodas, fruit juices, etc. I only drink water, Perrier, coffee, tea and of course wine. I added some starches back but whole grain pasta, an occasional piece of whole grain bread, wild rice or brown rice. Not much though.

What happens is after a while it becomes your normal diet and soon you won't be able to even crave what you dumped from your diet.

Go Michael, Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael, more power to YOU!!!!

I hope you keep updating us on how you are doing, and the type of meals you are preparing etc etc

It is a huge challenge, but I tell you one thing: if I had to pick 5 people I "know" who could go for it, your name would be on the top!

CHEERING FOR YOU!

I think you are making a great choice. My M.D. & R.N. grandparents managed most of their health

problems by following The Zone and were real believers.
