Speaking of gravy…I’d been wondering what this gadget was…

It was my aunt’s and somehow I ended up with it. Seemed to be the world’s smallest cocktail shaker. It’s one cup at the rim.

So the other day, in a fit of kitchen organizing fury, I decided to see what the internet thought it was, and most said cocktail shaker, but one said gravy shaker. That’s how my mil made gravy!, though she used a jar. Gravy shaker and measuring cup (the other side has quarter cup lines). I guess.

My mil taught me to put flour and liquid into a jar, then shake to blend w no lumps before adding it to pan drippings for gravy.

That's exactly what my mom did. Milk and flour into a jar and shake like crazy until the lumps are gone.

I still do it occasionally. When I do, I use one of those shaker bottles with the wire mesh ball inside. Works like a charm.

Marilyn--My mom had one of these shakers which she used to mix cornstarch with water -or- flour with water for thickening. It's probably still sitting in the kitchen cupboard at the farm where I grew up and where my brother still lives. Thanks for the memory!

I find this utterly fascinating! My grandfather and my mom used a very small whisk and a little Pyrex cup custard dish to mix up the cornstarch slurry and also a buerre manier.
