Suggestions on deep fryer

I am looking for any suggestions or advice on buying a deep fryer. There are only the two of us and my kitchen is not huge. However, I hope to do more entertaining and also live in a community where we have monthly cocktail parties and I need to take an hors d'oeuvre to share.

At catering events we take along this Fry Daddy for

appetizers (that is, the catering company I work for does). It works great for frying small batches of items quickly, even when we're doing larger size events of 150-200 or more guests (there's usually only 1 or 2 items we're frying and no more than 1 or 1-1/2 pieces of each item so the frying goes fairly quickly). From time to time we've used larger deep fryers but the beauty of this Fry Daddy is that it's smaller, lightweight, easy to transport, quick to heat and maintain the heat between batches, and quicker to cool down than a larger sized model (less oil to cool down). The plastic cover is also a neat feature but don't put it back on the fryer til everything is cooled down. ;o) It's inexpensive too.

I have one at home as well and love it.

I, too, use a Fry Daddy. I used to have a more elaborate deep fryer

I don't remember the brand, but it had a basket that you could lower and raise, and a lid to prevent splatters. It was very difficult to clean, and involved several steps what with opening and shutting the top and lowering and raising the basket. I really prefer the Fry Daddy. The Fry Daddy is easy to use. As Pat says, it heats quickly. It is very easy to clean. I do lay newspaper under it to prevent splatters, and that makes the cleanup easy.

I don't deep fry often, but I use the Fry Daddy to make egg rolls and won tons. It's also fun at a party to cut up corn tortillas and let everyone fry their own chips. Fried won ton chips are good, too. I've had the Fry Daddy for close to 10 years now, and it's like new.

Emerilware by T-fal?

Anyone used the Emerilware by T-fal? It has a permanent filter and goes into the dishwasher.

I've been looking for this one in the stores, but can only find it online. not at walmart or target

Good question though I haven't really found it an issue as the types of things

I fry don't really do well at higher temps...they would tend to get done alot faster on the outside than inside so 350-375-ish works for most of my needs.

That really helps

Pat, thanks for pointing that out. it really helps to read all the reviews.

A big pot?

I gave up on fryers long ago, too many cross-global moves to keep up with buying new superflous appliances each time -
plus, they take up a lot of space!

Use a good heavy pot, and fill it no more than 50-60% of the way up with frying oil, stick you thermometer down the side and you're good to go - clean up is a lot easier too!

Your suggestion sounds good Sandra. I see that

there's a negative review about the GranPappy and suggests your description of superfluous. See link.

Do you use a wire basket to place and remove food? I guess one could use the splatter screen thingy that I use over my fry pans as well?

I would think that a pot would be easy to clean by wiping out with paper towels first.
