The great Rye Flour Shortage of 2020

What was the rye stuff with sugar encrusted around the top of the bottle? It was served over milk

(what can I say...I was young) and called Rock and Rye? Does that sound at all familiar?

It was definitely on the sweet side.

Heck, I can’t even get AP flour. The store shelves are empty here.

Glad you were able to make some. I grind flour in my vitamix. Though hopefully not ap yet. I will try more stores tomorrow.

Scary. Apparently here, toilet paper is the go-to and no-find item. I can see cleaning and

sterilizing items, but why the rest of this?

shopping today

all the flour of any kind completely sold out. all of the rice and other dry goods like beans, except a few remnants of the most expensive, small packs of wild rice and Italian, almost all of the canned goods, all of the bottled water, all of the toilet paper, hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol some of the cleaning products that kill germs... sold out.

I talked to the cashier who was an older gentleman. He said they have no shortages but there has been so much panic buying (he didn't realize it was also these profiteers) that they haven't been able to get enough trucks from their distribution center to keep the shelves stocked. Their current trucks are on a faster pace than their busiest season, Christmas and they are not equipped to deal with this kind of demand. Inside the store a line had formed to buy bottled water that was just coming off the truck.

I went on offerup and every post I found selling toilet paper for ridiculous prices, hand sanitizer etc and flagged/reported them. These people are despicable.

I didn't realize people were selling or planning to sell all kinds of supplies. There was one guy in

Canada, called out on the national news for selling sanitizers and the like, for 3 and 4 times what he paid while hoarding at Costco.

He was shamed badly and the next day, took his ad down. In his broken English, he explained that no one was helping him out, the gov't wasn't looking after him. His wife was cowering in the corner.

Disgusting indeed.

I am guessing that people think that we will all have to quarantine for the 2-week period and when we emerge, we'll all find nothing available because the trees got sick and couldn't make toilet paper and the chemical factories shut down because of a shortage of employees.

Last week I was at Costco and couldn't find any paper products where they were ...

usually located. In their place were soft drinks. This week, still looking for paper towels - same thing. I asked one of the staff where they had moved them to and he laughed. He told me people were already waiting outside the store 2 hours before opening, just to buy toilet tissue.

Silly me - how did I not realize that there would be a paper product crisis because of an impending flu? I didn't realize I should have been hoarding...

I went back the next morning, but arrived a restrained 15 minutes before opening, to join the great toilet paper race. It was quite a spectacle. But I must say - the Costco staff did a good job keeping things calm, (semi) orderly and moving through that area.

So now I have my precious paper towels, and my parents have their toilet paper. With those Costco-sized packages, we will be "safe" for a good long while.
