We sound like twins...
growing up there was nothing I wouldn't eat except for canned peas. My tender little tastebuds even then knew what evil lurked in canned peas. But I loved peas, fresh ones, frozen ones, just not those icky army green ones. But other than that, the world was my oyster (and I loved those too). I think it has a lot to do with environment. We never knew we weren't supposed to like things on our plate. The food was put there and we ate it. That's the way it always was. Although I am now watching fussy 2 year old granddaughter, aka "The Drama Queen" have tantrums if something she has decided that she doesn't like appears on her plate during dinner, and I'm beginning to think her dislikes our textural based, which is a huge factor in my enjoyment of food as well.
I am fussier about quality now, as you mentioned Joe, but as an adult, I have decided that I probably won't buy the chicken feet off the dim sum cart, but I would try them if the chance presented itself. But there is one thing that I always pass up when there is a choice, even though I have eaten it on several ocassions: catfish.
