Neck massage to reduce fluid retention and lymph congestion in the neck area? This problem is so bad at times, it feels like I'm choking at night. If it's my sinuses/lymph nodes again, the doc will put me on antibiotics, but if I can make an improvement without as many dr. visits, I'm all for it. It seems like massage, or warm massage, would promote drainage from whatever the cause.

This post is very unappetizing, even thougth it's not food related. Sorry it's gross, but you guys give feedback which is worth listening to, which can be hard to come by!

TIA,

Angela

DH just got home from hospital yesterday - bad infection in neck, couldn't swallow

and they were afraid it was going to cut off his breathing. Started as a sore throat last Thursday, by Friday night he couldn't get a pill down. Saturday went to walk in clinich with doctor on staff and even though it wasn't strep, that is wat they treated him for. My 10pm, we loaded up and hit the ER which then admitted him to ICU where he stayed for several days before moving into a room. Be careful of 'infections' in neck.

Angie, have you tried a heating pad? Echenacia? Zicam? warm bath? A messaging/vibrating cushion?

They all may help, the messaging/vibrating cushion are at Walgreens, and they have some that are for the neck or head.

Sleeping on a heating pad my help

Echenacia will boost you immune system

as will Zicam (spray bottle)

A warm bath helps.

Not to alarm you, but I had Hodgkins Lympoma, cancer of the lymphglands, and I used all (but the Zicam) and they helped me then, 1984.

Has your doctor recommended anything?

I hope I didn't scare you but help you, I mentioned my Hodgkins to let you know I understand about lymph glands.

I hope your day gets better and you feel better.

Take care Dianne

Thanks for the responses. I may have to break down and go see the doc, but...

My problem is actually chronic, and to a much greater degree on the right side of my throat than the left. I take daily prescription meds for sinuses, use a steroid nasal spray, keep Zicam at my bedside, use a nasal strip at night and have recently added another throat strip for nights. I haven't tried a heating pad, but I am thinking about getting a small massager just to use on my neck. The doc might give me antibiotics, but my tonsils and adenoids were removed light years ago. I try not to go in unless it gets to the point I feel like I'm choking during the day when I'm up and around. That starts to get scary.

Music City Missy, I hope your DH recovers soon. I am familiar with the sensations from neck swelling, and have also had anaphylactic allergic reactions. I know how frightening it is to feel like you are choking or smothering. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Just want you to be safe - he almost didn't go to the ER

and it could have gotten even worse and gotten further into his system and down around his heart. They said they had only seen one case worse than his. He's been on a ton of heavy duty antibiotics in the hospital and will be on them for a while since they didn't operate to remove the abscesses.

Between my aunt dying in Feb from Wegener's Granulomatosis and this with him, it makes me very aware to trust your instincts and not to take a chance that things are minor. Her disease went undiagnosed for many years causing irreversable damage that eventually led to her death.

When DH had neck surgery, theraputic massage was recomended to help with

the fluid retention and swelling. But it must be done by a therapist well trained in lymphatic type massage therapy, and other causes of the swelling must be ruled out, like infection. It did help him, but he stopped cuz he didn't like massages in general. I would have gladly taken the massage for him : )

Have you tried hot showers?

Directing the shower on your neck especially the side that bothers you most. I find that moist heat does a much better job of pain relief than a heating pad. Plus the steam should loosen up your sinuses a bit. Or one of those neck wraps that you heat up in the microwave? It is dry heat, but it might at least make you feel better. I have an old-fashioned water bottle that you can fill with ice water or hot water, and the kids love it. They put it on anything that is hurting and it makes them feel better. i don't know if it really works but if they think it does, it's fine with me. I bought it at Walgreen's.
I would go to the doc before the weekend though because it is going to be hard to find one during the holidays. They will probably send you to Urgent Care or the ER. Feel better!

I might suggest trying a cleanse. It seems as if your body is harboring

some junk and it needs to be eliminated. Cleanses can be very effective.

Several thoughts about this>>

Angie,

My mom has been dealing with these same issues for years.

3 things I would recommend:

1 - Get a second opinion about your symptoms, your Dr might be missing something that might be extremely helpful to you.

2 - Consider complementary medicine - a chiropractor, homeopathic MD, etc, or someone who could instruct you in proper massage technique

3 - Consider an adrenal problem as the source of your issues, a problem which is seriously underdiagnosed and improperly treated within Western medicine.

This site is a little over the top in its presentation, but it has a lot of very helpful info:
