What a storm - lost all appliances - need recommendations for toaster oven and electric kettle

So - during Sandy the house took a power surge. It blew the breaker box and pretty much all the appliances - microwave, oven, dishwasher, washer and dryer, overhead kitchen lights and even my landline phone. All of them were under 5 years old. The 18 year old fridge is still running - figures - that's the one I would have wanted to replace.

So while I wait to be assigned an adjuster (takes 5 days....) can anyone recommend a good toaster oven - not too expensive. And an electric kettle - I need tea!

Thanks.

Tess

I too am interested in the electric kettle. No plastic parts and the smallest

footprint possible. I have a small condo kitchen but love my electric kettle. Mine is plastic and makes me nervous but I love it.

Tess, I love my Cuisinart Brick Oven (Convection too) I almost never

use my big oven except for cookies or large roasts. The counter oven does it all for a lot less electricity.

re. electric kettle

I don't have a brand to recommend but I will say that I wish I had bought a glass one.

Love my electric kettle. Use it easily 4xs per day. I have chefs choice international

that I purchased using a gift card. While I love it, they often sell less expensive ones at Cosco. If I were to do it all over again, and had a gift card, (ie $ not an issue). I would purchase the Breville glass tea kettle / maker. I have been watching them on ebay, and still can't rationalize the expense.

So sorry about your appliances.

Tess, glad you are OK. I seriously can't imagine losing power and water for an extended period of

time. Appreciate your tips above. Hope your home did not have serious damage.
Best,
Barb

I absolutely LOVE chicken roasted in a convection. With Penzy's "Norwood seasoning" over veggies.

I'd buy another counter-top convection oven just for that.

Tess...so happy to see you safe. I've been using a Krups electric for over a year.

Very dependable and it shuts off immediately after coming to a boil.

I have the Breville convection counter top and just love it. it's pricey(wedding gift) but is great

for everyday cooking and makes a handy second oven for holidays. America's Test Kitchen had an episode on rating toaster ovens and this one was their top choice, but because of the cost they recommended the second one for most people. I can't remember the second choice and you need to sign up to see the episode online. not sure if this helps any, but I wish you an easy re-fit of your home. the appliance stores must be going crazy! Never thought about the surge problem.

Also, if you have a BB&B don't forget you can use their 20 percent coupon

First time email subscribers get a 20% off one item in-store Savings Certificate since you may not have one of their mailers handy.*

Those counter top appliances can get pricy. smileys/smile.gif

*FYI, save those mailers - they don't really ever expire.

Glad you're ok! Appliance chat inside.

We have a fairly basic Black & Decker toaster oven--not the top of the line, but it does just fine, and the crumb tray slides out really easily for cleaning. (This may seem trivial, but every other toaster I've had required aggravated shaking over the sink to get rid of crumbs.) Only drawback about it--there's no way to turn off the timer ding...which can curtail midnight snacking, in a small apartment...

We also have a Chef's Choice electric kettle (model #677) that has worked great for four years (with no descaling necessary).

I love my cuisinart kettle. You can choose the level of heat

a setting to boil, one for green tea, one for oolong, black, french press and a delicate 160 degree setting. The temp makes all the difference!

Glad you made it through. Be patient, but firm with your adjuster. Keep all your receipts and present them expecting to be paid. Persistence and patience (and lip biting and tongue holding) will get you results. Don't let your adjuster get the best of you - their job is to keep costs down. Yours is to get what you have contracted for. Good luck! :+)
