What are your favorite cheeses?...

Trader Joe's carries the best feta brand I've ever had...

...and I LOVE good feta.

It's called Pastures of Eden, and it's imported from Israel. Creamy, not too salty --wonderful!

Look for a green and yellow cryo-pack,

Michael

Oh, that stuff reeks! but the flavor is more subtle than Camembert

Thanks, Gretchen for reminding me. I couldn't remember the name either.

Speaking of Camembert, on my first trip to Paris we stayed with Jacques' dad and stepmom, and Jacques stopped at the cheese shop for a fine raw milk Camembert that he knew his stepmom would like. She was delighted, though they didn't serve it that night. I forgot about it but after a day or two I started noticing that the apartment had a strange odor to it. It got worse by the day and was unlike anything I had experienced--like someone with very stinky feet had crawled in and died. (Jacques kept saying he didn't smell anything, and I began to question my sanity.)

Finally, they brought out Jacques' cheese and said "It's ready now!" It had been left at room temperature to ripen. EEEEWWW, but I was relieved to know I wasn't crazy. I could only handle a dab of it with a ton of butter on bread, and at that they took pictures of me wincing. It's an acquired taste; now I could eat one whole.

Limberger nightmares

I haven't found many cheeses I didn't like except limberger - guess I should try it again as an adult but someone bought it to class one day when we were trying interntional foods and that along with the guacamole dip turned me off and I love guacamole now so maybe there is hope for limberger.

They were sampling a brand called Yancey's at Costco Friday when I picked up a prescription and they were very nice cheeses - the smoked gouda and the horseradish cheddar (?) was really nice. Costco really has some nice cheeses and gets a few of the more 'specialty' cheese from time to time. I like their gorgonzola to put in sauces and such but agree whole heartedly with Gretchen on the gorgonzola dolce - if you haven't tried it you really should. Very nice just melted on top of a steak or any beef!

Cheese, Grommit! smileys/wink.gif My faves are Parm-Reg, Halumi, fresh mozzarella, feta (with watermelon), and >

kartoffelkase (prob. misspelled). Ok, it's not cheese, but it's mashed potatoes spiked with chives, cheese, and roasted garlic.

And...blue, goat's cheese, kashkaval, and any French cheese.

But a bagel spread with Philly is my idea of pure bliss, some days... smileys/smile.gif

feta with watermelon, wow, must try that. I love all the cheese mentioned here--

that I have tried. Never had limburger-will, some day.
I have good cholestrol and it's good calcium. So, I indulge a lot. Love feta on a cracker or thin bread with a lime or mango with ginger chutney.
We are limited here a bit, but the new Safeway is getting a better selection as they see this little town has good taste!

Great list of cheeses. There are a few I haven't tried, so I'll be checking them out. Thanks, all.

For "everyday eating", Rembrandt aged gouda, gorgonzola and Jarlsburg....

and for company...Roomano extra aged gouda. And gorgonzola, green-peppercorn cheese and "Fog" (I think it's called). Oh and feta covered with red peppercorns, olive oil and herbs de Provence.

My German Mom used to eat something related to limburger that the rest of us swore...

...was cured by being buried under a chicken coop for 10 years.

She stored it at room temperature, but we made her triple-bag it with Tupperware (long-since dedicated by default to ONLY that purpose).

My Dad used to wonder how she could get it close enough to her nose to take a bite! She had to go outside to eat it, as the smell would permeate the house longer than over-cooked fish.

She worshiped the stuff,

Michael

Yes it is Meryl! Thanks! All I could think of was London Fog and I knew that wasn't right. Ha!

I hoped someone would pick up on that and you did. Would have bugged me.
