What did you have for lunch today?

In the interest of using up leftovers, I made a salad with shredded lettuce (leftover from tacos), sliced flank steak (leftover from the other night), tomatoes, the end of a cucumber, the last green onion, some crumbled Stilton, and some sweet onion dressing. Also, a toasted roll (leftover from hamburgers). Unfortunately, I forgot to put in the dried cranberries, so I still have those.

Not bad for clearing out the odds and ends.

Three "Oatmeal Walnut Raisin" cookies: I'm cleaning out my arteries, my

colon and my pantry.

Not necessarily in that order.

Sardine open-faced sandwiches on...

Heidelberg seeded rye with Düsseldorf mustard, garlic-chunk dill pickle and cave-aged gruyere, iced sencha peach tea, prunes, pink lady apple, and almonds.

Mushroom and Barley Soup with a few additions from cleaning out the fridge. Added chopped leftover

beef, a little chopped cauliflower, and a tiny bit of leftover porcini risotto. Used cremini, shiitake and domestic mushrooms (to clear out the vegetable drawer). Yummy soup.

Mushroom and Barley Soup

2 tbsp butter
1 small onion or 2 leeks, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 carrot, chopped
1 celery rib, chopped
1/2 bell pepper, chopped (optional)
3/4 lb. fresh mushrooms, sliced or coarsely chopped
5-6 cups beef broth (sometimes I use 1/2 chicken broth, 1/2 beef broth or all chicken)
1/3 cup uncooked barley
3 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
1/2 tsp dried thyme leaves
bay leaf
salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
juice of 1/2 lemon (optional)

In large saucepan or small stockpot melt butter, add onion, garlic, carrot, celery, bell pepper (if using), saute 2 minutes. Add mushrooms, saute 1 to 2 minutes. Add remaining ingredients except lemon juice. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer about 30 minutes until barley is tender. Add lemon juice, if desired. Can also add any leftover bits of chopped chicken, turkey or roast beef, if desired.

Been hearing so much about the larb that I'm driving 60 miles to the Asian food store 'cause I'm out

of oyster and fish sauce.

Sounds wonderful!

the truth?? a piece of sheet cake and a mint cookie----attended a "teddy bear tea" from my quilt

group, where we distribute stuffed animals with quilts to various social service agencies and women's shelters in town. I just love this group activity. My DH also got involved and would bring home stuffed animals that he found on clearance. It was a great outreach that we could share.

OH MY Poor Hips, I was taken for a quick bite...Leek and potato soup, tarragon, grape....

chicken salad, chocolate carrot cake and 1/2 bottle rose.....
Don't really want to make supper but I intend (for DH's sake) to try the yummy sounding tuna sesame balls......

I took the last of a pasta dish we made the other night

that had dried apricots, chorizo and lots of garlic in it. I also sliced up a chicken sausage and tossed that in.
I also ate a cut up celery heart and some hummus.
