What is your all time favorite brand of dark chocolate to bite into?

Walking through stores like Whole Foods, Bristol Farms and Gelsons, I am overcome by all the brands (and high price tags) on bars of chocolate. Does anyone have recommendations for the best tasting dark chocolate?

My favorites are Santander Columbian 70%, Chocovic Guaranda 71%, Fiori Sera 65 %, & TJ's Swiss 71%

I like Trader Joes Pound Plus bar, but it must be warmed to the point of . . .

where it will bend and stretch somewhat. Flavor AND texture, good stuff. If it is melted too soft, not good!

Meryl - I've never even heard of those (except TJs of course). Anyone like Sees or Godiva?

cheezz, they're all fantastic, and more than worth checking out! I HATE Sees - way overrated, as is

Godiva. I tried Sees for the first time last year -received a box from someone during Xmas. They were so bland, not creamy, etc., etc. I know a lot of people love See's, but I'm definitely not one of them!

If you want to read a little info on Santander and Chocovic, go to chocosphere.com
Fiori has their own website.

By the way, you can find the Chocovic at TJ's. They also sell Chocovic Ocumare, which I hated, but I loved the Guaranda. Of course, as with everything else, it's all a matter of personal taste. (I don't have a TJ's near me, but a few very kind Finer Kitcheners have sent me care packages).

Hey Meryl...Don't hate me...but I went to the grand opening of The Chocolate Box here in Seattle...

and rekindled my relationship with Lee...the owner & chocolatier at Fiori.

The next day, we met...and he gave me a big box of his truffles. Whoa. Definitely try the champagne truffle if you get a chance. Amazing. He's also playing around with a curry truffle that's the best I've ever had. One truffle he has is strawberry and balsamic...but it's blended. I asked him if he could do a fruit and liquid balsamic (a la chocolate covered cherry.) Let's just say...it's a work in progress. smileys/smile.gif

Lee has got to be one of the nicest men I've ever met. And his palate is incredible. Love, love, love his chocolate.

Check the link for photos and a short write up from the Chocolate Box grand opening event...

Traca, I didn't hate you before, but now I REALLY HATE YOU!!! smileys/smile.gif Maybe it's a good thing I don't

live in the Seattle area - I'd eat my way through the city!

In defense of See's, I love their chocolate orange creams are one of my all time favorites, however,

I had some chocolates sent to my mom via internet, and she complained about them also. I think you have to utilize these chocolates in person. Their chocolate dipped caramels were my yearly Valentine's gifts to my boys. Don't write off See's, I think you just have to go in person to get them. Chocolate and orange...mmmmmmmmmmm aka Homer and doughnuts.

Okay, but for a real treat, I'd check out Chocolate Vitale's European Drinking Chocolate....

Oh my...this stuff was amazing! And absolutely worth every precious calorie.

If you ever wanted to stick your face in liquid chocolate, this is the drink for you!

PS. Meryl, if you knew some of the projects I'm working on, you'd hate me even MORE! LOL!

I love Sees Nuts and Chews. I have for years, but I realize I am not a...

...chocoholic super-taster.

And, I have not tried even 1/4 of the chocolates mentioned in this thread, so I don't really have a basis.

But I DO have something to look forward to, eh?

Michael

I love See's, because it's what I grew up with. Perhaps if I hadn't loved it as a kid,

I would be cynical about it now, but to me, it's comfort food. So much of chocolate passion involves memory.

At the moment, I'm halfway through a giant Cadbury milk chocolate bar that a British client gave me. Her mother brought a load of them from England, and they're not the same as the name brand in the U.S. It brings back memories of my one long stay in London in 1985, where I ate them daily.

this doesn't answer Cheezz' question, but check out this truffle shop I visited last year in CA

You can see from the website name that the owner is not a shy modest type. I'm not a choc expert by any means and certainly not by swap means, but I believe these are some very special truffles. One of my faves was the Dark Diablo, dark, spicy, mmmmmm.
