What's on your menu for the holiday? We are having...

manicotti for the eve, group prime rib dinner on day with spinach gratin and twice baked spuds

that we are contributing. what others bring will be a surprise, but it always works out.

I'm doing Christmas Eve this year. There will be 15 of us.

I'm making:
Brisket in the oven.
Swiss chicken cutlets in a white wine sauce
Hungarian Dressing (that I shape into balls which doesn't really go with the above but my girls love it and insist I make it every holiday meal.
The girls are bringing the sides - potatoes, creamed spinach, Caesar salad, jello salad, carrots.

Dessert:
Strawberry triffle, pumpkin roll, honey kisses, best darn sugar cooks. Girls bringing - cheesecake and white Texas sheetcake.

Christmas Day, the girls are going to their inlaws. DH and I will go to Church, have a lovely day with leftovers or go to my nieces.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

I'm with Barbara . . .

I never host or get to cook. So sad.

Until the past couple of years I was always the traveller, visitng family. At least then I could help with the cooking.

However, in the past three - four years I have been at home alone for the holidays, so it's just me.

This doesn't mean that I don't cook . . . at least a little.

So for Christmas eve I might make a serving size of my Mom's Shrimp Tarragon (usually our NYE dinner when I was a kid). And for Christmas I will make a lasagna - and as I said to my SIL, "it's a rule, isn't it?" Christmas morning will be my family coffeecake which I ship or deliver all over the country for the holidays, but I always save one for me!

NYE dinner will be my Chicken Flambee recipe - it includes brandy and a full bottle of champagne. (It's a Silver Palatte recipe that has been so mine for so long that I actually renamed it so I no longer remember the reference.) I figure if I don't burn down the house I will have good luck for the year!

Best wishes to all.

Thanks Barb, I appreciate it

It just seemed like, that this month, everything that could break, broke; anything that could (HA!!! a piece of plastic just broke off the door of the CD-drive on my laptop!) anything that I really needed, I couldn't find; and every time I planned something, it never happened.

Just a string of bad luck... maybe after Christmas things will turn around!

I do charlie, one of my favorite things about this forum is peeking into the lives of

others all aver the world thru their food customs. What a terrific place.

And, one of the things I love most about living in the DC area is the extremely diverse population. I have worked with and live near people from all over the world, how fantastic is that.

20+ years ago I worked for a local department store. Twice a year we would close for a day for inventory and be "locked in" the store. That ment everyone brought lunch. I always organized an international lunch for my departments. My staff came from everywhere and each person brought in a dish from their culture. It was so much fun, we got to share in the cultures of others and hear stories of how grandma prepared it back home. And, some of the staff were young and it prompted them to find out how to make a traditional dish. Everyone in the building would want to come to our lunch!

For the first time, I'm making tamales. Wish me luck. When we lived in Texas, we used to stand in

line to buy them on Christmas Eve day. I'm using the linked recipe, but have done a lot of research and see there are many variables. I'm going to have to improvise to steam them using a petal veggie steamer, a water chestnut can with the top and bottom cut out and a pot that's only 7 inches deep. The amount of lard really varies from recipe to recipe as well as whether to tuck both ends or not and even how long it takes to steam them. So I need the luck and I'd better get busy.
