What's your favorite pre-made jar pasta sauce?

As I mentioned to barb above, Hunts is the only commercial brand I use. It's cheap, available...

...and not too sweet. I totally agree with you and Marilyn about commercial brands being too sweet.

I use the Four Cheese Hunts as a base and go from there. Good taste and about a buck a can.

Ragu Chunky Sundried Tomato and Sweet Basil

I'm almost ashamed to admit this but I have found that by adding 3/4 lb of browned ground beef to a jar of this is quite good.

I used to like Hunts as well but stopped using it after getting a few cans that tasted 'tinny'.

And seriously tinny at that. It totally ruined the dish and was a waste of money for the other good ingredients. I was bummed.

I know that taste. That's why I like Muir's tomatoes. They line the can.

I'm going to give Hunt's a try with a can of Muir crushed tomatoes added.

The last time I made a dutch-oven full of spaghetti sauce, I used organic beef, organic chicken, organic tomato purees, sauce, paste and juice.

Darn thing cost $40 to make and hubby gave 90% of it to the neighbor, not realizing I hadn't saved ANY for us.

Which I normally wouldn't mind except:
1. We enjoyed one dish of spaghetti out of 3 hours worth of work.
2. Our neighbor would be happy with spaghetti sauce dispensed from a vending machine. So I fear my "all organic" effort was wasted on him.

After working in QC for many years, I don't think they would allow

anything toxic because all foods have to be tested by the FDA. But with continual research, you never know what isn't considered toxic one day, might be the next!

Thanks for all the reccommendations. I'll give some of these a try.

Alas, no Trader Joe's here, but I agree their sauce is really good. I've never tried the Newman's brand--might give that a try.

Thanks again!

Ragu is one I've used quite a bit as well and do the same as you, browning the meat first along

with some onion and garlic, then some herbs and sometimes wine to the sauce as it's cooking. Makes for a decent pasta sauce in a really short time.

Another thing I do with jar pasta sauce is saute some sliced onion and bell peppers then add the sauce to the skillet and simmer whole Italian sausages in the sauce then serve with pasta...mmmm good and a quick meal for a busy night.
