An 8-hour drive from Montreal or 11 hours from Quebec City. You will love both! Especially Quebec City, it's one of my favorite places. I have never really overnighted in Montreal in a hotel, always with my husband's relatives, and it's been quite a while since we stayed in Quebec City. Last time we went (3 years ago) we stayed in the Chateau Frontenac and frankly we were disappointed. Given the reputation and price of the place we really expected much more in the way of service and luxury.
Across the street from the hotel are two restaurants I very much enjoyed: Aux Anciens Canadiens for traditional Canadian cuisine made with regional products and a delightfully rustic atmosphere, and a Swiss fondue place whose exact name escapes me at the moment but it's right across the plaza from the Chateau Frontenac main entrance and has a red roof. If it comes to me I'll let you know.
