anti-climatic, cooking blues.... I can't be the only one this happens to? having done

I can understand

gently letting someone know that you don't care for some food, and certainly if you have medical reasons. But to have lists that are expounded upon, and then every dish you get the third degree "Now does this have any onions, green peppers, or celery in it???" said suspiciously and demandingly...

Eat some place else!

what do you do if you're served something you can't bring yourself to eat? do you discreetly leave

the offending ingredient to one side, hoping your host doesn't notice? or do you say something, apologizing for your somewhat picky ways? s'pose there are many variables, including how well you know the host.

that's just over-the-top. my friends will eat just about anything I put in front of them.

I have one who doesn't like mushrooms so I don't do shroom dishes when she's over. I always ask about allergies if someone new is coming. what I love are anchovie haters.... when my friends discovered how many they've eaten in the food I've cooked they no longer hate them '-))

I can't do wheat and lots of carbs but I never mention it when I'm invited out. I always figure there will be plenty of something I can eat. if I know ahead of time it will be a high carb dinner, I load up on meat before going out. it takes a lot of pressure off my hosts.

Yes, I have heard this. It still seems to be the rule in some cases---

I've noticed that in France, though they may spend the entire dinner talking about food as a subject, they never mention the actual food on the plate in front of them. Like you said, the evening is supposed to be about conversation and company. I'm used to gushing on about the food and asking for recipes all through dinner, so I found this hard to get used to.

When I've entertained Europeans in my own home I notice that if I get compliments it's usually at the end of the meal. Sort of a "hold your applause till the symphony is complete" policy, lol. So, if a French friend does compliment me on the food during the meal I know I've really really scored!

I once had friends over who brought THEIR houseguest with them. When I told him what the main course

was, he asked if there was an alternate entree!!!!

Don't you love sneaking anchovies in? My theory:

Everbody loves anchovies; some just don't know it yet.

now I've heard everything! what did you do with him? have they found the body yet? smileys/smile.gif

awww.... this is why we do it. one of my friends just emailed me this....

Thank you so much, m'dear! Greg will definitely appreciate this recipe.
AND, thank you so very much for the wonderful dinner party! We had such a great time. The food was incredibly delicious and the company unsurpassed.
I've heard Greg on the phone 1/2 the morning telling his customers all about the different courses.
You are simply THE BEST!
And, we love you!!
Love, Sheila

ya know I'll be cooking for them forever!

Dawn, you would just die if you saw what a disorganized slob I am in the kitchen, Now, when

I'm cooking for someone else I force myself to stay organized and leave things clean, but left to my own devices, I can mess up a kitchen just by standing idle in it, LOL! Don't assume anyone, especially me, is more organized than you.

The commercial says, "Life's messy; clean it up." I say: sometime tomorrow.

This is an amazing thread. I thought I was all alone on my AR island, worrying

about the food, the lulls in conversations, the personalities, the presentation, the dust I hadn't dusted.

Now I know there are loads of me out there. Thank you!

Our most relaxing party ever? I had the menu written, all the ingredients were bought, Deb's 12-Hour pork had been roasting when we ended up in the ER with my MIL from 3:00 am until noon. Our 4 guests showed up at 1:00 pm and took over the kitchen, preparing everything else. The entire meal was delicious...the way they prepared the ingredients showed off the pork better than my fancier dishes would have.

It was the first time I ever sat down to a dinner party in my own home and was relaxed enough to truly enjoy the entire experience. I'd do it all over again, except for the 3AM 911 emergency call and the 8 hours of hanging around the hospital bit.

Marilyn, what a great idea for my dinner group...

Plan the dinner, buy the ingredients, then go out for the day and leave the ingredients for someone else to cook into whatever way they see fit. Could be a fun new twist for the next round of dinners.
