Brining back a T&T--Tomato Gratin

This conversation reminded me of our train rides through Italy. We had bought a 3-week Italian all-rail pass (much cheaper than EuroRail) and ended up taking a lot of "local" trains doing multiple stops (versus the high-speed one-destination trains). Every time we would pull into a station, the conductor would jump out, walk over to side of the station building and pluck a ripe tomato and basil leaves growing in the pots there. Then he'd hop back on the train and we'd keep going.

Now I wonder if there were even riders getting on at those stations or if he just needed a tomato & basil to go with his sandwich.
