C'mon Eva and Heather, our Weekend Six!

My weekend six

1. On Saturday we went to the Waffle Shoppe for breakfast. I had two pieces of French toast, two pieces of bacon, a scrambled egg, and half an order of home fries (extra crispy). Luckily we did A LOT of walking after that.

2. Saturday evening cooked Ron in Worchester's marinated pork tenderloin. I'd started marinating it on Wednesday, then didn't get to it until Saturday (this always happens to me). I did steamed summer squash and couscous for sides.

3. Blackberries for snacks. What is better?

4. I've switched over to drinking mostly green tea now. Finally found a couple of decaf ones that I like, so I made some iced tea with the mint-flavored green tea. So good--doesn't even need sugar.

5. Made spaghetti for dinner last night. Just used jarred sauce, but I added in garlic, mushrooms, and a package of fresh basil leaves that was collapsing on me. The fresh basil made a big difference. Also did garlic bread--yum.

6. Bought fixings for vodka tonics. Bring on summer. smileys/smile.gif

Doh, don't know what happened there ^, but I was going to say: Ang, I can't

IMAGINE getting four inches of snow so late in May. That can't be the norm even up where you are (or "we", as I should say.....). I mean, a snow crystal here and there can happen even in late May, but four inches?

I hope it'll disappear soon. I'm glad you made Sangria - it's like a piece of summer in a mug smileys/smile.gif

it is now a record breaking season for late snowfall. very unusual. flakes here and there are norm

but not this accumulation in May.

I can't imagine - I really hope the late snowfall won't affect the fall harvest in any way.

Last year, the area where I have a summer house, got a really late frost night and it killed many apple flowers. Since this is the apple growing province of Scandinavia, a lot of farmers lost large parts of their apple crops and it affected their income badly.

OOps, I'm late! My Weekend Six

1) went winetasting in the Livermore Valley at Murietta Spring's Winery, built on the site of the springs where Joachim Murietta, the famed outlaw and bandit, used to water his horses. There's a nice little fountain built using the spring water and no more wild horses. The wine, however, was fantastic! Their winemaker is Chilean and has been planting Portuguese grape varietals but making them in a Rhone style. I learned a lot about varietals I had never heard of previously. The tasting room was full but we got the full treatment and ended up having a glass of wine on the balcony overlooking the vines while they pulled our wine from the "library" since we were allowed to buy some things not normally sold. I like my wine friends and their superpowers!

2) came home from winetasting and made myself some of my homemade bacon! Wow! Then I took a nap!

3) Sunday I went to brunch. Please note this is the most social weekend I have had where I just did things for fun and it felt great to be "normal". So brunch was a popup for a local "bakery", Marla Bakery, at the State Bird Provisions restaurant. If you are going to be in SF this Sunday I would recommend having their brunch, check FB for Marla Bakery and how to get a reservation or go early at sit at the counter. I had dried cherry and tarragon scones with a little jar of marscapone and rhubarb compote piped in. All of these years searching for decent clotted cream in the city and I realize, stupidly, that I should have been using marscapone all along... I am going to tinker with my scone recipe now after tasting these. I also had a platter of roasted lamb with spiced yogurt, flat bread and fattoush, and lots of cava.

4) I walked home from brunch, that's almost a mile! I had to ice up afterwards and I was passed up by elderly ladies using walkers but I don't care, I did it!

5) After a nap I had more bacon. Yes, more bacon! I also started marinating a beef shoulder roast from my butcher bag - I cooked it last night actually, made a pot roast smothered in sweet onion and leeks and wow.

6) Anyone notice the leeks these days are so filthy? I mean I know they grow in dirt but the last batch from the farmer's market was so filled with dirt like I have never seen before. I almost made a mud pie in my sink and I had to chuck some of the outer leaves because they were stained with mud, I mean stained... weird! I guess it was all of our late rains. They also have those hard centers, which I think means they are going to flower??

State Bird Provisions was on my list for my last trip to SF, I'll put it at the top for next time!

Here's the salad. It's an old recipe. I make it for myself when I'm feeling guilty about not

getting enough salad food. Salad for one seems a bit dismal.

Seven-Layer Salad

Layer:
8 c. sliced lettuce, iceberg
½ c. sliced celery
½ c. minced green onion
½ c. chopped green pepper
10 oz. Frozen peas, rinsed but not defrosted
1 c. Grated carrots

Mix and pour over the above, sealing the edges:
½ c. slightly whipped cream
1 ½ c. mayo
3 T. Sugar

Top with:
6 oz. Grated cheese (I use medium cheddar)
1/3 c. bacon bits

Great pictures and delicious looking food. The fish looks yummy and interesting. I wondered if

it's poached in oil, but don't think it would still be in oil at that point. How was it prepared?

I have now read about the scones several times over, and I'm drooling. Mascarpone next! smileys/smile.gif
