Come on gang, let's don't let this idea die... It's my favorite part of the week! My Saturday Six

my weekend six---I was computer-less till today.

listened to "Year of Magical Thinking" on my way down to the cabin. not sure if I am ready for that book, but it sure did speak to me.

made another batch of zucchini bread and butter pickles.

made another batch of crockpot applesauce.

No snow yet, but one good thing about snow is that the bears hibernate. no more spooky walks with the dog, till the spring.

made another batch of the Hershey Chocolate cake, using self rising flour instead of the AP flour and leavening and baked into cupcakes. they were perfect. froze them and will ice and decorate for work on Friday.

bought fabric to make those kitchy casserole take-along quilted thingies. I brought a casserole to my neighbor's last week in an old one, and she and her daughter thought it was the best thing ever. We will have a craft night together to whip up a few for gift giving. fun.

your peanut butter cookies are really all that's needed. dip some in choc, roll some in logs, dip

some more in chocolate and crushed peanuts(my sister's favorite). heavenly.

re herbes de provence: watched Julia and Jane Brody episode about bread machine doughs, and Jane

made cloverleaf dinner rolls, which she sprinkled with herbes de provence before baking. that would be so fragrant and delicous. It was a fun episode. Julia was quite sceptical about the bread machine baked loaf. She really didn't want to like it, but she did.

My Weekend Six...

(Okay it's Monday but I didn't get on the pc much...)

1) Friday night I made a terrific beef stew, with a twist. I added butternut squash to the pot and also Guinness beer and wine. It was really delicious. I put pictures on my blog today.

2) It really has to be a rule somewhere, like a sensor or something at the door, that you cannot be allowed in places like Costco or TJ's when hungry. After that stupid flu bug I needed real food and ended up spending a huge chunk of my available cash on a zillion things. Mind you I am one person, and not expecting any company
- stuff for beef stew, as above
- a double pack of Aidell's chicken apple sausages (that's 16 sausages!)
- pumpkin sage ravioli. Wow are these ever good. They came two huge packs per purchase.
- 6 lbs of dried pasta (all the fun shapes, penne, spirals, etc. - some chichi brand)
- a cheese party pack - for which I plan to make macaroni and cheese once I finish the beef stew and my Sunday dinner (see #3)
- a tub of organic heirloom tomatoes that are really delicious (8 tomatoes)
- a 5 lb bag of sweet Peru onions (I must say that I only have 3 left now!)
- a huge bag of green beans
My fridge is so full and I am not really hungry most of the time but need to build up my nutrition so that I don't get another bug this winter. Stew anyone??

3) On top of Coscto I went to the farmer's market Saturday and purchased herbs, rome beauty apples and grapes, and a duckling from Massa Organics, a local brown rice grower. So Saturday I started Susan in Kentfield's mom's slow-cooked duck with sherry and ginger. It's a 2 day process, so last night I had the roasted duck with brown rice cooked in the duck stock, and green beans dressed with my favorite lemon tarragon vinagrette. So good. Now I have a nice tub of duck fat in the freezer, and more duck stock for ramen soup tomorrow.

4) A slight rant. I bought this duck, it was nicely packaged in heavy plastic so I didn't see until it was out of its plastic that it was missing an entire leg and thigh. It was a small duck, so missing this piece is a good chuck of available meat! I was disappointed because the thigh is my favorite part. Not to mention it was $17.50 per duck. I contacted the grower and all he said was "some of them were missing legs or wings, the package should have been marked". When I said it wasn't and I wouldn't have purchased one that was missing a part, and sent him a picture of the label and the mutilated duck, he just said "I hope you enjoy what you have". Now, that really sucks, doesn't it? I'm still feeling slightly grrrr.

5) I bought goat's milk and a small tub of yogurt to make the crock pot yogurt, wish me luck! I have some lovely jams to stir into the finished product to eat for breakfast.

6) Do you ever listen to your food cravings? I tend to purchase things for recipes I see here or things I just really crave. Today I saw this website about foods that boost immunity and I have been craving all of these things, and funnily enough, purchased them all recently. It's an interesting list:

Hope you all had a good weekend!
