Going to New York City for a few days to meet friends from the UK. Any recommendations?

Where should we eat that's good, but not too expensive? We'll be in Brooklyn as well.
The Most Exciting Thing is that we have tickets for the Met Opera!!! The Marriage of Figaro, I'm so thrilled.

Have been hearing raves about BV burgers (offshoot of Bobby Van's Steakhouse--which has an indoor restaurant seating 3 course prix fix at 55.00)
Burgers are 5.00 from 11am-3pm and are substantial. A few outdoor tables, but mostly takeout. 120 West 45th St New York, NY 10036 Theater District. Midtown West
EAK Ramen: E.A.K Ramen - But First, Ramen. Two locations in NYC, HIGHLY recommend their signature EAK Ramen. It's fantastic!
Ballato: Ballato's NYC real Italian food. Interesting place. :)
If I think of any others, I'll add. Have fun!

I’m not going to know of any of the fancy places because it’s been too long, but I never could go back to ny without a stop at papaya king’s hot dogs, the tropical drink I could never replicate here on the west coast. So good! Possibly the cheapest eats in nyc.

Thanks for asking, monj. I don't have much that is food-related to report. I had a great time, but wasn't able to go to the places recommended, sadly. I had hoped to go to BV burgers on our last day, when my vegetarian friend had left, but it was really wet, so after getting soaked walking round Battery Park (DH's only wish in NYC, but they were building so we couldn't walk next to the river), we holed out in the in NYC Public Library looking at the Treasures exhibit - thanks, Marilyn! We not only saw Winnie the Pooh and friends, but saw so many other incredible exhibits, such as a piece of music written by Mozart!

We ate quite well, mostly where it was convenient. The food highlight for my foodie friends was Junior's, in the Theatre district, oddly enough. I love going there, and always drink an egg cream. I had read about them so often, so the first time I went there, I felt as though I was in a book, seeing them on the menu. Judith and I actually dragged our husbands to the garment district, where J bought fabric and I spent a fortune in a bead store. I was quite excited to go into Fraunces Tavern for a drink, as I'd never managed to see it before, but they ignored us, so we left without buying. Lovely to have been inside, though.

The highlight of our trip was going to the opera at the Met. What an experience! We walked up those gorgeous red stairs, and my friends bought us prosecco at the bar, so we sipped it looking out past the incredible starburst chandeliers at the other people, many dressed beautifully. The music was incredible - we saw The Marriage of Figaro. I had thought of this as a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but now I really want to go again, and sit closer to the stage. Must save up. The opera was long, and we had a busy day, so we couldn't go the Lincoln, much as we'd have liked to.
