Is there one of those foods that you just can't keep in the house? For me, it is meatloaf.

Swarms of locusts...love it!!! I hear you on fresh bread, especially for me it's artisan

bread. Speaking of good brie....have you had Cowgirl Creamery's Mt. Tam? OMG. Hurt me! Soooo good.

OK so now I have to try it.

I think I had one of their soft cheeses but I don't think it was brie. THey are out of Point Reyes right? (I have had the Pt Reyes Blue which is very good) Only recently did I learn that Marin is the oldest continually operating soft cheese producer in the U.S. As a kid I took the tour of the cheese factory in the downtown Sonoma square. I'll have to see about taking my kids to Marin - which is actually in Petaluma just north of Novato so technically it is Sonoma county not Marin... But they were probably around before there was a distinction. BTW today I had their brie style cheese that has blue cheese culture. Very nice. I've gotten into this habit lately of drying my own chives which sprinkled on the cheese (and just about everything) is real nice.

Pepperidge Farm cookies of any type, but especially Sausalito. I hear them calling to me.

Traca, not really a recipe, but the idea. First, I should tell you that

that my in-laws from Hungary tell stories about how each family makes it differently. They will say things like, "Barb, you remember Zolli, they served the cucumber salad with sour cream". I think it is similiar to how italians make their gravy. Each person makes it differently. I, on the other hand, like it all ways.

Method: Peel cucumber, thinly slice on mandoline, salt, rinse and squeeze out water, add vinegar, sugar, minced garlic, sour cream, etc and of course paprika.

Fun, family story, thanks for bringing me down memory lane!

Best,
Barb

You won't be disappointed, Paul. That Mt. Tam is creamy, light

and delicious. Yes, Cowgirl Creamery is located in Point Reyes. I'm sure you can buy their cheeses through other stores/sources too, for instance, at the Ferry Building in San Francisco there's a Cowgirl Creamery shop. But that's a bit further for you than Pt. Reyes. If you haven't been to Pt. Reyes in a while, it's worth a trip. The tiny town has some quaint shops worth browsing through, and a few good restaurants. And if you like good coffee, I can highly recommend grabbing a cappuccino or latte at Toby's Coffee Bar (see yelp link), then take your coffee (they have yummy pastries too) to a picnic table outside and enjoy this glorious sunshine we've been having. We loved the coffee so much I went back and asked the brand and was able purchase a pound of the beans at Toby's Feed Barn right next door. Realllly good coffee.

I love your idea to dry chives....must do that myself. Thanks for the suggestion. That brie cheese with blue...was it a Cowgirl Creamery cheese? Oh, and at Cowgirl Creamery, you can sample any of their cheeses....just ask.

Now I will have to go. As I recall

isn't late winter one of the key times for whale watching out by the lighthouse? I'll have to look into that. And coffee, you pretty much sealed the deal there. I'm ridiculously addicted to coffee... I even roast my own coffees.
Have you tried the Equator Coffees out of San Rafael? These will blow you away. I like Peet's but these are a step up from Peet's IMHO.

Rouge et Noir Le Petit Bleu

the brie with blue veins was from Marin Cheese Co. Link here and while the prices on their website are pretty extreme, our local Costco has good pricing on a couple of their cheeses. My wife is on a Costco run at this very moment with specific instructions to bring some home...

Regarding the chives, two things that I've found useful: 1) asian style "Suribachi" instead of a regular mortar/pestle. This is if you want the chives really small/flakes or even to almost a powder consistency. The ribbed walls really help to break down the chives whereas my stainless steel m/p tends to get clumpy and it is near impossible to really get the chives. This being different from the standard little chive rings.
2) WorldMarket has some really nice, glass spice jars for about a $1/each.

These chive flake/powder have become a standard in our home. Great in the morning on eggs but another nice use we've found is on home made potato chips. But goes on pretty much anything savory.

If you like Peet's, and yummy Equator coffee, I'm

pretty sure you'll like the coffee served at Toby's. In fact, I'm sending you a donation right now (through the donation button) to treat you to a coffee and pastry at Toby's, as a thank you from me for all you do for this site. Enjoy.

Yes, whale-watching season should soon be in full swing, from what I hear. Years ago it was Point Reyes we came to see the whales migrating back north. Didn't see any a couple weeks ago but it could've been too early in their season of migration. Will keep my fingers crossed you get lucky with whale sightings when you visit. smileys/smile.gif

We're off to Monterey/Carmel today....perhaps we'll see some whales there. If not, I'm sure we'll see some otters and sea lions. smileys/smile.gif

Ahhhh yes, I've had these cheeses. They're darling round

offerings, just perfect for a picnic or an appetizer platter. And actually, the blue/brie is my favorite in the bunch. If you like that brie, you're gonna *love* the Mt. Tam. I'm fairly certain. smileys/smile.gif You can ask them for a taste of it, and then you can purchase as much or as little as you like. I got a teeny tiny piece, about 1/4 lb., and it was perfect for us as a nibble. Cowgirl Creamery also has some lovely fresh baguettes so if you wanted to take some bread and cheese to your whale-watching sight, you'd be set. I should warn you that the prices in the Cowgirl shop are up there, but the quality and flavors make it a worthwhile stop.

How did you know I was wanting a source for spice jars? smileys/wink.gif Thanks for telling me about Cost Plus...will definitely check them out.
