ISO: ISO: Well, here we go. We'll be doing some real lifestyle changes in this house.

not sure if anyone's mentioned salt - cutting back on salt can really help with blood pressure and

water retention. not sure if you use many processed foods - the amount of added sodium to things like soup and vegetable juice is atronomical. most processed meat is full of stuff that's not so good for you, too. check out the nutrition labels!

Thanks so much everyone for the help. We have both been trying to figure out

what and how we can make some changes. He needs to take off 20# and started walking in the morning. Like I said before, the stress is critical and that is not as easy to control. Sometime circumstances control it and this is a very calm, collected guy. The only can things I use are tomato products so I'll start buying no salt cans. We can cut down on the salt but we don't use that much really. I only salt when cooking but I can reduce that. I make my own stock and don't salt it at all. We don't eat processed meat at all. Certainly can't afford a nutritionist at the moment so we'll have to figure out what to do on our own. He is a perfect patient however, all I have to do is include him in the cooking process. He loves to be my sous chef. He loves beer and is probably where the weight gain is but has really limited that in the last few months to just 1 a day. And has 2 glasses of red wine in the evening. I'm not sure cutting those out are that crucial when you add in the start of exercise and again...that stress thing. A beer isn't all that bad. Oh well, thanks for the ears! LOL

Editing to add one thing we know can change...cheese!!! We both love cheese and I will have to rethink everything around that. I'll probable use it sparingly but won't use that low-fat stuff they call cheese. I'll use the best and very little. And he goes back to the Dr. Wed. for the rest of all the test results. Hopefully there won't be anything else.

did you know that garlic lowers blood pressure and cholesteral? and olive oil lowers

the bad cholestral. I take garlic capsules and it really makes a difference.

good luck with the changes you are making and getting healthy and happy! smileys/smile.gif

Just an update for anyone interested...Dr. appointment 1 week later and

and the pressure is 158/82 (190/110 last week) lost 1 pound and everything else is great. I have made some great food over the last week and I pat myself on the back as well as him for the work he has put in on it. I have kept the sodium to under a 1000 and he can now have 2250. WooHoo!

This is great news, keep up the good work. It really isn't

as hard as it appears to be to cut down on the salt. As I said I cut out all cans to begin with, I admit to using salted butter but then almost never use butter so it is hardly an issue. The rant on what they put into "stuff" which we consume is a really worthwhile rant.

I do believe that eating 'fresh' has been the best thing for my DH...all those years of cruising and eating cans from foreign countries may well have added to his problem 10 fold but now things have really improved.

Hugs
J

Thanks for all your tips Joanie. Very helpful, it's a matter of being aware

of what they do to our food isn't it?
