My Saturday Six (chop, chop - it's almost Sunday!)

Thanks so much Janet, I looooove candied orange peel too, especially dipped in chocolate. Think I'll

have to make these and dip the ends. yummm.

The reader is wonderful !I found myself not being able to turn off the car

...when I got to work both by the story and the wonderful voice.

Plus the descriptions of what it is like to enjoy reading is a wonderful drink of water for anyone who has a love of reading and books.

The whole experience for me was like being a kid who asks: Tell me a story...and then gets magically swept in. smileys/smile.gif

I'm so happy you enjoyed the Chicken Tikka Masala with the HVC!!

Nothing like the real McCoy, eh?

What a great looking menu!

I bet Larry had fun being June Cleaver...

My weekend 6...

Sort of a sad weekend, as the produce season is revving up for most of you, mine is winding down. Probably the last weekend I'll be able to get the beautiful straight from the field organic lettuces and I'll also miss their spinach, arugula, kale, beets, turnips and herbs, such as cilantro, that I'm not currently growing.

Another favorite produce stand closed Saturday and the proprietors are looking for a new venue. Not sure where or when that will be. They're my source for fresh tomatoes almost year round. First Florida, then GA, TN, and NC. Nice eggplants and in season, red peppers 2 or 3 for $1. Yesterday they were selling GA tomatoes and peaches for .99 a lb. I'll be grocery store dependent for produce for awhile, definitely not a good thing here in Florida.

Went to Sam's club hoping they'd have more of the wonderful halibut I've found a couple of times at their weekend seafood kiosk. Not only was there no halibut or wild salmon, there was no seafood kiosk at all. Maybe next week. Got red grouper at Publix instead.

What am I going to do with the lone yellow squash languishing in the crisper?

Why is there no standard weight/measurement for grated cheese? I've seen cheddar listed at everywhere from 3 to 8 ounces per cup. Very unhelpful when recipes only give the cup meansurement. Same with parm, plus it depends on which tool I use to grate it. Yeah, I know...a bit OCD going on.

Looking forward to slow-roasting Plum tomatoes to stash in the freezer. I couldn't pass them up at .99 a lb.

My Saturday Six....spilling over to another few on Sunday

Yesterday was a whirlwind of preparation for overnight guests, my sister and brother in law who arrived for lunch.

Fed them Tomato Coconut Soup with Kale and bread & cheese. There were grapes for dessert.

Guests went to a museum for the afternoon while I made 3 salads for dinner which were served with wonderful steaks brought by my sister.

Enjoyed appetizers on the patio: frico, shrimp with cocktail sauce & hummus and pita crackers. For dinner we had beautifully BBQed steaks & the salads. For dessert we had Raspbery Buttermilk Cake, fresh raspberries & light whipped cream. Yum.

After dinner we enjoyed lively conversation while watching various wildlife appear in the meadow across from our backyard. Spotted were a variety of birds, oodles of dogs and their owners, a number of rabbits and later even a fox.

Guests left this morning after a breakfast of orange juice, smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, capers, lemon wedges & pots of coffee.

After doing the laundry I watched a Miss Marple and had a delicious 2 hour nap.

Do you live near the Fell Street Stairs? We happened on them accidently while geo-caching up by ..

Coit. What a lovely surprise!

Isn't it 2 to 1 - but that doesn't address the weight. I think it's

2 cups = 1 lb. Or is it 2 lbs = 1 cup; no, that's even worse! I'll go goole it.

Dah! Of course it does! I meant density. I guess it's

1 lb = 2 cups, but if it's a particularly light cheese, like Parmesan, then it's 4 cups. I usually figure 1 lb = 2 cups then add more if it looks like too little. Does that help at all? ;o)

My Sunday Six

1. I had Dawn_MO's cottage cheese breakfast today and it was so good. It was so good I almost had two breakfasts smileys/bigsmile.gif.
(Quote Dawn: I start with the cottage cheese, then shake some cinnamon, then chopped apples, drizzle with honey, sprinkle sunflower seeds and finish with some raisins. That is something I have for lunch sometimes and it's delicious. I bet peaches would be good too."

2. Went to the Botanical Garden with a friend and we had the best waffel lunch with waffels served straight out of the waffel maker. Ate them with jam and sour cream on top. Bliss!

3. Bought fresh strawberries this weekend to have as a snack. I and SO have snacked three pounds of strawberries in 48 hours smileys/smile.gif.

4. We had Evelyn's Briami for dinner. Every time I make Briami, I ask myself why I don't make it more often. It is soooo good!

5. SO got some hand made chocolate as a gift yesterday. We ate them by splitting each and every praline with a knife. We both wanted to taste all the pralines smileys/bigsmile.gif.

6. This weekend has done nothing for my diet so I ended it with a cup of tea and french brie on crackers smileys/bigsmile.gif.

My Weekend Six

* Friday night started with a picnic at the free Creekwalk Concert (Zydeco & Cajun) to celebrate my last day of work ever

* Sat woke up at 4:30 am (still in employment mode?) and made that killer Curried Red Lentil Soup w/ Chickpeas & Garbanzos

* Didn't cook another thing all day but we finished up that soup!

* Sunday woke up early again but stayed abed until 9:30. Earl made me breakfast in bed (wonder how long THAT will last?)

* Later walked 4 miles downtown to the Library & Post Office and had lunch at the nearly new sandwich shop

* Going out to dinner tonight with MIL & Earl. Hey this retirment thing is way-cool!

Sunday six

first thing, Shante got a young bird that escaped upon entry through the cat door, and landed at my feet. scooped it up and returned it to some very anxious parents.

dealt with moving the vynal records and need to check on value.

got a lot cleared out of the walk-in-pantry, finally.

got a portion of the counter in laundry cleared off.

tried to find some requested info on my office bldg and went into overload. I'm sure more than half the paper work should never have been kept and I'm not able to determine which is which without help :-0

moved my Italian cookbooks to, now cleared out, bookcase in the dinning room smileys/smile.gif

having a glass of wine to go with my whine.... '-D

Dawn, I sure hope your sunburn is better by now... oooowwwwie girlfriend !

My Sunday 6

1. Liberated from the Union Square Greenmarket for dinner: radishes and Italian chicory (with tilapia, avocado, crusty bread).

2. Chicory verdict: chewy. Husband's verdict: "My grandmother used to feed this stuff to the rabbits."

3. Had an amazing lunch with SandrainNewYork on Friday! We plan to take over the world. Sandra will cook; I will scribble. How to make money on this remains the big question. smileys/wink.gif

4. I have lost all will to bake. Not sure why, but it has a kind of phantom limb effect; when I see cakes and pies, I think, "Oh, yeah..."

5. My dad's cousin has generously arranged to show me around my family's haunts in New Jersey, with a historian. smileys/smile.gif There is also talk of a big distant-family lunch: HURRAY.

6. Going to a brown-bag lunch talk by the head of Martha Stewart Online, tomorrow. At the last brown-bag lunch, I watched a young editorial assistant from Random House (who seems incredibly chic in every other way) make and eat a PBJ with sliced bananas...during the talk. Odd.
