My Saturday Six this week

Sounds wonderful Joanie. Except for the part about missing those that

aren't there with you. Ar you SURE you don't to adopt me?! Sounds like a beautiful life you have down there!

Called Mom to wish her a happy MD; spoke about the menu...She knew exactly the salad...Montclair?

She gave me..."I can't believe you do not remember....You have to call Uncle Marty!" And then she went through the details of the recipe as she recalled eating. She was upset that I had not added the cucumer. (I thought it would get mushy...You know I have lots of experience with Hungarian Cucumber Salad!) She said that it must be added, and not cut thin, etc, etc...She is looking forward to it this evening! It seemed to invoke lots of memories..

Now on my list tomorrow is a call Uncle Marty..

My Sunday Six (I'm always late these days)

1. Missed breakfast so we could get to church on time. Luckily we have a good spread at coffee hour.

2. At coffee hour (see #1), I had some jicama with cinnamon sprinkled on it. Was wonderful; must try that.

3. Steak for dinner tonight--yay! (Then DH is taking me OUT to an actual movie while the grands babysit.)

4. And cheesecake for dessert...double yay!

5. We're still eating that ham...I've been making Croque Monsieur sandwiches on pita with the ham and Gouda cheese. Yum.

6. I have two bananas that are about to collapse--must make banana bread.

The cake was RICH and tasted superb however I wasn't happy with how the finished product

looked. There must be a trick to prevent the layers from sliding away from each other.

Book Recommendations for identifying Asian Ingredients...

I am fortunate to have an Asian food mentor (we dine or shop at markets regularly) but for a leg up, here's two books that really helped enrich the Asian food experience. Both have lots of great pictures and thorough explanations. If I lost them, I'd run to buy them again.

Asian Ingredients: A Guide to the Foodstuffs of China, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam (Paperback)

Culinaria's Southeast Asian Specialties

My Sunday Six (I'm with Amanda...)

I'm planning for the week...mine is more like a running to do list:

1. Sneak preview for the Seattle Cheese Festival is tomorrow. Looking forward to samples galore!

2. Confirmed a small group rendezvous/reading with Ruth Reichl(!) on Friday. Wondering what the Basque-style resto will be serving for appetizers?

3. Conducting 2 interviews this week: recap with August's chef John Besh (studying his menu currently online) and Sur La Table's Renee Bhenke (reviewing the pre-release of her new book). Making an endless list of potential questions for each of them....

4. Have houseguests during this weekend's International Food Blogger Conference. When will I find time to stock the fridge????

5. Attending the James Beard Foundation's Celebrity Chef Dinner on Thursday. Wish it was any other time....so I could linger & enjoy it more.

6. Tonight: drink a bottle of champagne & soak in the bath. This week is going to be crazy busy!

Traca - Thanks! I have been trying to find stuff on the internet but it's not

working as well as I had hoped. Some have descriptions but no pix and they are the fairly well known ingredients. This tiny market has bags and bags of different greens and herbs or something. Cheap but I don't know how to use them but I am so intrigued. I think she would teach me and share but it's such a small place and there are always people waiting in line.

Traca, pass on to Ruth that my bookclub read and discussed "Garlic and Saphires"

just this past Friday. We loved it.

This is SO not fair having to follow Traca....

1. Sauteed home-made chicken/pork/apple/onion sausage patties with scrambled eggs and cream, the last of the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, and whole-grain toast.

2. Made 4 jars of fresh strawberry freezer jam.

3. Made frozen mango smoothie tartlettes:

1 package Goya frozen mango
1 frozen banana
1/2 C drained thickened yogurt
1 scoop (1/2 C) protein powder
1/2 can mango nectar
a couple of ice cubes.

Blend until smooth. Sweeten if necessary

Fill lined cupcake pans to the top (no expansion). Freeze, then serve individually with a dollop of thickened drained vanilla yogurt.

4. Mousse pate, warm crusty La Brea bread, country-style Grey Poupon, Irish Cheddar cheese,
organic Braeburn apple, mediocre fresh strawberries (see #2), Vigonier (sp?) wine.

5. Warm homemade 7-grain whole wheat bread, right out of the oven with peanut butter and coffee.

6. Tea with homemade oatmeal cookie.

(Please note that I did not swim the length of the English Channel today in order to burn off these calories. They plan to stick around and join the huddled masses near my hips.)

Salad was a hit..Enjoyed by all; per your suggestion,I added extra garlic..now a call to Unce Marty

I worked on the promotion for Ruth & this book...it's lovely, isn't it? I love her books on audio

too. Ruth tends to read the abridged versions herself, and leaves the full narration to someone else. I find both equally enjoyable. smileys/smile.gif

Ang, what was it about Garlic & Saphires that you liked best?
