My Saturday Six (with any luck I'll get it all done today)

1) Take coupon for washer & dryer Pat round for me to Best Buy and see if I can get that deal so I can stop jumping around (although I have warned my coworkers that if I make a sudden jerking motion - it might be leftover bits of my washer in my clothes until they've all been washed a few times)

2) Going to the upscale furniture store warehouse sale - deserately need a new comfy chair and sofa and love seat to go with it plus I still need a couple of chairs for DH's new office in the bonus room. Hope they have something.

3) Looked at exercise equipment last night - DH got on a kick for a treadmill after talkingto his sister. I suggested we look at eliptical as well as recumbent cycles. Think we've decided on recumbent cycle - we're both old and out of shape and this will be less impact plus it's easier to get a tired lazy person to sit down and do something, right? At least it's a start.

4) Ordering a pilates reformer - that's the exercise I want to do.

5) Now that I am getting fit, I can start trying some of the yummy things I have been seeing all of you make - where to start???

6) Christmas shopping - can't believe how far ahead I already am but I'm going to send out the requests for everyone's wish list today so I can get the bulk done this month.

My weekend six

1 - Happy I ordered the subscription for Taste of Home magazine for myself too. Excited and can't wait for the first issue.

2 - Still giggling from Melissa's description of stray metallic pieces getting stuck on her underwear

3 - Ripping up the tomato garden (what a lot of work for nothing) and getting some outdoor work done on this, probably the last, nice weekend for a while (60ish tomorrow)

4 - Roasting pumpkins

5 - Making no-cook pumpkin cream pie with above pumpkin puree. Does anyone else watch Katie Brown? I really like her cooking/recipes.

6 - Will have to try at least one new thing from the board this coming week. Can't decide which. Desserts look good but we still have lots of sweets leftover. Hmm...

My Six

Went to a neighboring community noted for cute boutiques with a friend, had lunch, shopped, and had fun.
Dinner tonight is rib-eye steak, just dug Yukon spuds, sautéed mushrooms and onions and green salad.
Fall is finally here.
I'm having a martini with TWO olives, because I'm very tired.
My hubby did the shopping today at Trader Joe's and Costco.
My neighbors are having a church party at their house with over 80 people, cars are lining the streets and I'm so glad it is her party and not mine!

Saturday Six

1. Made something ridiculously simple and great for dinner: chickpeas, carrots, kale, tomatoes (all hot), plus lemon juice, garlic, olive oil.

2. So...all the cooking I thought I'd be doing in connection with The Ghost in the Pantry has come to a halt for two reasons: 1) tons of work and no time to plan, and 2) husband was told to stay the heck away from butter, cheese, and all other cholesterol-happy foods...which means no rabbit in cream sauce. smileys/frown.gif (Not that I'm too upset; after all, I prefer a healthy husband to weeks of stick-to-your-ribs food.) Caveat reader: don't eat that stuff every day. It's not terrifically healthy. Maybe I should've put a disclaimer in there...

3. Am resurrecting a thawed, failed cake from this summer for breakfast tomorrow, toasted and served with yogurt and fruit. smileys/smile.gif

4. Bryant Park (a block from where I work) is now stuffed full of holiday shops, including a Max Brenner chocolate outpost, a mom-and-pop apple-cider shop, a pretzel place, about ten kettle corn shops, and probably more that I didn't see. Now the only temptation is to avoid wandering through there during lunch for the next 3 months...

5. My mom and I are thinking of packaging mixes (cookie, cake, etc.) in Mason jars for some holiday gifts to have on hand. Do you have any recommendations? (These are what you sometimes see at bake sales with the dry ingredients layered in jars and a recipe attached.) Also: yes, I know these are outdated as of 10 years ago, but I think they can be updated. smileys/smile.gif

6. Oh! A friend of mine is coming out with an Italian cookbook called, "Breaking Bread in L'Aquila." Her late husband was from L'Aquila, Italy (a town that was hit last April by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake), and she wanted to do something to raise money for the town while drawing on her knowledge of the area's recipes. The book should be out before spring, but she started a blog here: Food and Fate.

Happy weekend! smileys/smile.gif

Thanks everyone - the 'coupon' worked. I'm now the proud owner of a new washer & dryer

They didn't give me one second of trouble or question. New washer and dryer will be delivered next Saturday. WOO HOO!!! No more itchy undergarments.

I have been thinking of soup mixes for gifts for my kids for one hanukah present. Any suggestions ?

Weekend Six

Interview with Momofuku's David Chang on Monday. Made his pork belly recipe from Epicurious as part of my 'research'. YUM.

Made James Beard's Pate from the Heceta Head B&B cookbook. Ate it all by myself. Oh-so-good!

Going down to SF next week. Plan on eating & drinking my way through the Mission District! (Whoo hoo! HeatherHAL, you ready???)

Real motive for California trip? Long time dream realized: Worlds of Flavor Conference at the CIA in Napa. This year? The theme is Street Food & Comfort Food. Carpooling up there with author Andrea Nguyen. She warns me, "Eat your fiber because you won't find much there." Is that really a problem??? smileys/smile.gif

Attending the conference: John T. Edge, Rick Bayless, Norman Van Aiken, Naomi Duguid, Paula Wolfert, etc. Think I'll pass out if I meet any of the above.

My weekend six

1. Cauliflower was on sale; on a whim I purchased six. I need to make some giardiniera or some Chinese pickled cauliflower.

2. What to do with six balls of fresh mozzarella? Can it be frozen and used later for cooking?

3. I acquired some nice back fat from the butcher, so it is time to make wild boar sausage.
I need to decide between andouille and hot Italian (or make both).

4. Move organic turkey from freezer to refrigerator for a two-day thaw. It's time to make some confit with the thighs and test the November Gourmet recipe for cider-glazed roast turkey with the breast. I may smoke the legs when I smoke the boar sausages.

5. Shrimp are relatively cheap right now, and that means a big pot of gumbo would be waiting for the andouille.

6. Aren't some football games on TV today?

Weekend six:

Am leaving for Tortola-BVI this week to join DH. Trying to use up food in the fridge, I didn't even go to the last day at the farmers market because I knew I would buy stuff I couldn't use up.

*pot of veggie soup with whatever was in fridge

*light frost Fri night so gotta use up so herbs from garden: cheddar dill biscuits to go with soup

*sauteed a batch of chopped Swiss Chard with onions, oregano, lemon zest, raisins, and pine nuts then mixed that with some whole wheat penne and crumbled feta. This will be dinner for a couple of nights.

*double recipe of fig jam from Joy Canning book-you soak the figs for 4 hours with the sugar then cook a bit with spices and fruit juices then let sit overnight again, canning pot is heating up the water as I type

*friends asked me to dinner tonight, I will get an assignment later today, if dessert is needed I will offer up a fig and raspberry tart with lavender honey

*have been worrying about DH a lot on his sailing trip from VA to Tortola. They lost the engine on the second or third day. Little communication because they only have a sat phone. Fortunately winds have been very favorable and there has been little need for engines. They are "bringing up the rear" as I see it on the GPS location map that is updated every 4 hours. They have had some good fishing tho. Their boat has caught wahoo which went into fish tacos but the marlin was too big to bring aboard so he went back. Flying fish jump aboard at random but get thrown back. They also saw a pod of dolphin looking fish that were black with pink bellies, beautiful to watch. Other boats have caught mahi mahi, tuna (also to big to bring aboard) and mackrel.

I freeze mozarella balls in the liquid they come in. I make sure the cheese is thawed

throughly before I use it and use if in gratin dishes, like lasagna, potato au gratin etc.

I'm not sure I would use defrozen mozarella cheese in a salad, because the cheese is a little more watery after it has been frozen. But for cooking stuff, go ahead and freeze your cheese. (Hey, great rythm there! smileys/wink.gif

Sunday Six

Leaving on a cruise in 4 weeks so I'm on a mission to eat out of the freezer and bring the content level down as much as possible.

Did very well on freezer-reduction-mission this week then stumbled yesterday at the Asian market buying fresh manila clams for dinner. But oh my, that was the best darned linguine and clams dinner we've had in a long time. Sooooo good. Hubby woke up this morning mentioning the yummy clam dinner...fresh clams and linguine are one of his all-time faves. And a happy hubby is well...you know...a good thing.)

Actually stumbled twice yesterday as same Asian market had live lobster $6.99/lb. Couldn't resist the price as they said it would be nearly double today so I bought some and will be making something fun with them tonight. Hmmm, what treatment to do?

Tiny bit of turkey left from roasting a half turkey this week. Will make some turkey soup today to use it up.

Found some '00' flour at the health food store in the bins (great price too). Dying to try making pasta with it. But first may use it in the Chocolate and Sea Salt Shortbread Cookies from the A16 Cookbook.

Bought some lovely pears at the Asian market yesterday to make Maple-Vanilla Roasted Pears with Vanilla Bean Custard Sauce. The house is going to smell good today while all this stuff is cooking.

My Weekend Six

1) I bought a turkey on Friday, and it morphed into an awesone 'Thanksgiving' dinner yesterday. The only thing missing, was the actual Thanksgiving... smileys/smile.gif

2) Found out that a 10 pound turkey (for two people) is a lot of meat. I need to get creative.

3) The pumpkin pie was very good. So good I am enjoying a slice now as we speak.

4) Baked pumpkin cranberry muffins yesterday. They tasted funky. I realized to my horror that the pupkin can was dated 'Best before 2005'.
Needless to say, they are in Muffins Heaven now.

5) Baked Barbara's Harvest Muffins today. Except from the fact that they burned a little on the top, they tasted awesome. I am definitely making them again.

6) I really need to figure out how to use the turkey for todays dinner. I'm thinking cold cuts served with warm creamy tomato sauce and pasta on the side. And yes, also served with brussel sprouts. I have a ton left from yesterday smileys/smile.gif

I did these (and it was just about 10 years ago!) and everyone really liked

them. I used the large size Mason jar and it held the dry ingredients for a standard 2- to 3-dozen cookie recipe.

Other cute ideas I've seen have been Deconstructed Snowman (with sugar, white chocolate powder, cinnamon heart, a couple of chocolate morsels, a few raisins, a candy cane stick, etc.) and Mint Chocolate Cocoa (less fun, but pretty and sounds good). You can probably find these at one of cheezz's links, above.

Have fun!

Eva, I love left over turkey sandwiches, warm up the turkey a bit, top with some

swiss cheese to melt, warm up some crunchy rolls slather one side with mango chutney and they other with mayo, stuff with the warm turkey and cheese. YUM!
