NFR: Speaking of my dying computer, has anyone tried Carbonite Backup systems? I've heard ads on the

radio. Randi Rhodes swears by it and it sounds like a good deal. $55 a year and your files are constantly backed up while you're connected to the internet. Apparently you can also access them from other computers. I figure I would search my hard drive for documents that contain SS#'s and such first.

It's not just my files--all of Long Beach Organic, my non-profit that you're so eagerly voting for in the video contest, is stored on my cheap hard drive too. I'm not the best at backing up my data and this seems like a good solution, but since so many of you are more tech-savvy than I, I'd appreciate your opinion.

Joe, my webmaster uses it and highly recommends it. I've been considering it, but I back up all

my important files on 3 types of discs, so it may not be necessary for me. I think it would be a very good option for you.

I can't help you with Carbonite but I just wanted to tell you again how

jealous I am that you can get Randi! I live in Florida where she lives and broadcast from and I can't listen to her! At least she used to air out of Florida when I could listen to her. Now I can only hear her neighbor you know who. Humph!

I'm too cheap for that. What kinds of files/space do you need?

When I needed to copy everything from my work laptop before leaving my job (and it had been my primary pc for years), I went and got a flash drive. I think it was about $16 for 20g. Moved all my files/bookmarks/etc there so I could transfer to my new laptop and if need be I can carry it with me. I already carry a flash drive with all my recipes with me.

If you want to set it and forget it, you could get an external HD. Windows 7 even has an auto back-up built in, but there is software you could get to do the same. Personally I'm weird about putting my info out on the net and too cheap to pay a yearly fee vs. one time.

I have a laptop, and with my new router I can plug an external HD into it so back-ups and access are wireless to anyone on my home network.

She's in Washington D.C. now, and I think she is available on Sirius (sp?) radio.

I absolutely adore her.

D.C. Really? Did she sell her house? And I can't afford it. And I do too, she makes me smarter!

She still has the house in Florida. Her mother and niece live there. She has a boyfriend in D.C.,

named Howard. "THE HOWARD." She's very happy these days.

There's gotta be a way for you to hear her. (Do they call it streaming? Again, I am technically wanting.)

You're so sweet Joe. I know I could stream her but the sound on my

laptop is not very good. Wouldn't work while I'm cleaning bathrooms and such. And I'm a busy girl. Satellite radio would be the best solution but I don't feel like I can afford it now. I'm so glad she has found someone. I hope all good things for her. She's a good person.

Flash drives are the best! The only thing I don't like is they can't be labeled on the outside.

She's a truth teller. for sure. I hope her website can give you a fix, even if you can't listen

Joe, first, have you cleared your cache? It can make your computer run slow if you haven't.

"The Computer Cache is where the Temp Files, Cookies, Etc. are Stored, so the PC will load the Pages and Files quicker each time."

Basically, every time you visit a web page, your computer takes a picture of it and saves it for later use. There are hundreds (thousands?) of websites I'll never visit again. Removing those from your computer's cache (saved on your computer's "brain" just in case you visit again) will make your website run much faster.

I have an external hard drive that I back up every night as well as once a week

I back up my most important files on a flash drive.

I was dragged reluctantly when I was given one at work. Liked it so

much I bought one just a few months later. See, I keep telling you-sisters of other mothers!

Also, I moved recently & the internet is painfully slow. Switching to Google Chrome as my browser

(as opposed to Internet Explorer), made a HUGE difference.

Yes, I've done disc cleanups. I use Safari, which is about the only browser that works

on my machine with any speed. I use Firefox for things that won't open in Safari, but it's very slow.

This computer is on its last legs. The USB ports don't seem to work so I can't load things onto my thumb drive anymore. I have to email them to Jacques' computer and back them up there. The same with uploading pictures. I don't want to spend any more $$ repairing it. I'm saving my pennies for a new machine, but meanwhile I have a ton of data on here I don't want to lose. I thought the automatic web backup would be a good choice and like the fact that I could access files from another computer.

I guess my main concern is the security.

Maria, I admire your organization. I run my kitchen like that--always cutting up whole chickens,

making all my own stock, bread, etc. I can't stand to spend the money on packaged food.

But my office is another story! I'm kind of hopeless and at my age I might be ready to accept the fact that it won't get any better, lol.
