I haven't used carbonite as I do more enterprise level backup

but for my home network I find dropbox very useful:

It is also free for the first couple of gigs and you can also access from pretty much any of your devices as well as add people to share specific files.

There are many such services to Dropbox with similar plans. Dropbox is just one of the original services and widely used. Both Google and Amazon offer cloud services that range from Free to enterprise with pretty much any scale.
