NFR: Speaking of my dying computer, has anyone tried Carbonite Backup systems? I've heard ads on the

Can't beat a MAC! Don't have to worry about viruses, doesn't crash DAILY like pc's tend to do

and user-friendly. I think PC's should all come with a baseball bat as part of the hardware package

Joe, you're in L.A. aren't you? You can get the usb port fixed easily and cheaply

My office just moved, but for the last 15 years we have been next door to the greatest computer store -
C & R Electronics
1522 Centinela Avenue
Inglewood, CA 90302-1144

(310) 672-8991

They are cheap, fast and family-owned. Tell them Jane from next door (Motion Tech Trends) sent you.

You can also get a cheap external hard drive to plug into the USB port and quickly transfer everything from your computer.

Thanks, Cheezz, but I've resolved not to spend another hour or another penny fixing this thing.

Just saving my pennies for another PC. (Ducking)

(You should get together with my best friend Dennis who is an insufferable MAC enthusiast--to the point where we just can't talk about computers. I'm afraid I can't afford one right now, even if I were willing to give him the satisfaction.)

But I appreciate the tip and I'll make a note of it. It's not far at all--I was born in Inglewood! If I ever make it there, coffee's on me.

I have a Maxtor external hard drive. It came with software that I've

scheduled to back-up every night. Instead of turning off my pc I just restart it at night so all my back-ups and deep scans can work while I sleep.

ANOTHER PC???!!!! Joe, I'm afaid there is an intervention in your future-are you listening Dennis?!

Here...this is what I do to keep my PC running (all freeware)

If you are on shaky ground do a back-up first. This was recommended to me by an IT friend/what they use.

I went kicking and screaming away from my MAC years ago but had to for business reasons. When I was shopping last month for a new laptop, I looked at MACs but couldn't justify the cost/again, need to align with business platform.

Run once a week:

Malwarebytes (malware/spyware)

Spybot or AdAware (as back-up to above)

CCleaner (system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool

AVG (is my anti-virus)

(also go into system tools and defrag/etc)

You and Dennis talk to each other. Until you agree to gift me large sums of money,

it's I who am not listening. *Covering ears* La la la la la la la....

A PC costs a lot more in the end... not even counting the frayed nerves and tech calls smileys/smile.gif

What is with MAC owners? They are like kool-aid drinking cultists!

Practice safe computing and everything will be fine. It's not that Macs are safer it's that hackers don't write viruses for Macs because they just don't care.

Some of my best friends are Mac users. They are weird...yes, I'm talking to both of you Bobs! When the Apple store opened in Tampa they made a 200 mile pilgrimage to shop. I think you can get a pc at the Dollar Store.

I used to tell "our Randi" (Robinson) that she's have to excuse me--I have an appointment

with my other Randi.

Never understood it either. I've used both and when people ask which they should get, I just tell

'em to get the same one as the person they're gonna call at midnite for computer advise has. Solves SO many problems.

I do encourage my family to get MACs so I can sleep through the midnight hour as they call my nephew

in New Zealand.
