NFRC: Illegal Goats and Garden Mutinies. May I rant?

Birria! my housekeeper gave me her recipe, but I've never tried it. (She uses beef or chicken...

the goats here in Alta California are too greasy for her.)

Did you say "impromptu?" How fast can you roast a goat? We've had hours-long wine tastings,

even though we're on Park and Rec. land. I'm not above violating the municipal code, if we're quick about it.

Went on a trip to Mexico while in my late teens. I ordered cabrito in a very elegant restaurant

down there so all my very drunk buddies ordered it too, not knowing what it was. I thought it was great-they were upset when I told them what they were eating.

Why is it when you are trying to do something good, something nice for others there are

such hateful people and obstacles to deal with? So sorry you have to put up with all that nonsense! Hugs!

I feel you pain...and thanks for the heads-up on pitfalls and mutinees...

Having watched Food, Inc. I'm really up in arms and since I have room, I've been wondering about this myself. My family sold 5 of our 7 acres when I was 14, and so I'm sitting next to 4 unused acres...right beside me, where I played as a child...and I know where the water line lies... I've often wondered about talking to the present day owner about leasing part of their property. It would resolve them having to mow that portion of it...a real pain as it is a real fire hazard. I appreciate you relating your experience...
And goats? Bravo!!! On a love-hate scale, I learned to love my snakes...I'll never love a goat again in my life. Ever. Not even on my plate. LOL! Decimation to be certain!!

Glennis, are you thinking of starting a community garden or gardening the land yourself?

Either way, it has to be presented as a win-win situation. We have gardens on both city property and private property. For the private property owners, they only get $1 in rent, but they also get a tax deduction, and they're relieved of maintaining the property and insurance. Empty lots in the city gather trash, graffiti and worse, and they're a liability. We offer insurance and maintenance in exchange for use of the property for at least 5 years. It's a good offer for someone who has idle property they don't plan to build on for a while.

If you are thinking of starting a garden group, you can become a non-profit corporation, and donations to the garden are tax-deductible. For instance, on one garden we pay $501 per month rent, and the owner then donates $500 to our organization.

The two biggest expenses for us are water and insurance, and the plot fees for the gardeners are set to cover those bills.

The city gets the same advantages when they lease land--no more maintenance and insurance.

Even if you just want to have your own garden, your neighbors might be willing to rent you space for next to nothing just to save on maintenance, as long as there was a reasonable time limit in writing.

HOO!

Thanks for the hugs and jokes! It's good to laugh about it. I'm not hating the human race quite

as much today.

Still leery of goats, though.

Nope, never go that way... I heard goats are great for keeping the grass mowed, though...

and ducks for keeping the snails under control.

Our chickens love snails too. They fight over them. I love the idea that I'm turning snails into eggs

HEY, I'm watching that just now!! ballroom scene now. lovely!

Christopher Plummer just made my top 10 list.

You mean the scene where the tune from "The Lonely Goatherd" becomes the waltz they dance to?

You're all torturing me!!!!!
