I made the sweet potato-apple torta to go with dinner last night. Very good so if anyone else has made it and liked it, I can help make it a "third" for T&T.

Went to local Applefest where a local band (friend of friends) was playing. Beautiful day for it - 75 and sunny.

Making tomato sauce for spaghetti and meatballs (fell-apart, tried to make them without eggs) tonight!

Made the orange whip-pudding fluff for dessert tonight (so good).

I found my Weslydale(?) cheese with fruit for the first time in months. And It was a the "scratch and dent" store, so I bought 3 packages. Very good in an omelet!

Nice long walk at the lake after breakfast this a.m. This weather is tooooo good to waste inside (I realized this soon after I started doing laundry and organizing the pantry!).

My Saturday Six

at the present time we are almost at the worst point of our kitchen renovation, so cooking is kept simple and my weekend has a lot more of 'non-cooking' than cooking... still... let's see

1. Woke up and did a nice, long session of P90X yoga

2. Folded all the painter's tarps that were over our countertops, cleaned them to get rid of the fine dust from smoothing out the concrete floor the past 3 days. At least the kitchen has some clean surfaces to work on

3. Butterflied and marinated pork tenderloin to grill tonight

4. Played 9 holes of golf with hubby....

5. Walked the dogs

6. Sauteed mushrooms with a bunch of fresh thyme, courtesy of Cindy, with whom I had a wonderful lunch on Wednesday in Wichita, KS!

My weekend six

Thought I was finished with cooking Wed. night (tortilla soup, fajitas, rice, quinoa salad). after a month of holidays! Not.
Friday my daughter hinted strongly about dinner. So I scrounged in my freezer and found some osso bucco. Accompanied by rice, it was quite delicious
During dinner my son called to say they were back from their vacation and would we come for lunch Saturday and
bring the lunch too!!
Went shopping Friday night for chicken. There wasn't
anything I liked in the market so back to my freezer.
Made an absolutely delicious beef stew early Sat., packed up some tortillas and rice, stopped at the market to get cheddar cheese and off we went to lunch of burritos.
Of course there were leftovers from their Fri. night which my in laws had taken care of. Eggplant salad and stuffed chicken.
Sandra can you tell I am missing my Mexican food!!
I am not cooking today!!

My Weekend Six

Began my morning yesterday with an hour long swim. Laps can be boring but I get lost in thought. There were the occasional bits of chat with my swimming partner but they only lasted a few seconds and we're back at it.

Went to 4 stores looking for red currant jelly which I need for my early Thanksgiving dinner. No Luck! Will let my fingers do the walking today and will call a few gourmet shops within a short driving range.

Bought the wine for next weekend's blow out and some for a friend's birthday gift.

Bought ingredients for coq au vin and prepared same for last night's dinner. The steamed green beans and roasted squash were delicious as well. Yum!

Will get out and enjoy the warm sunshine today. Perhaps a drive in the country will be in order to take in the fall colours. We can be in the Gatineau Hills within half an hour.

No major cooking for me today as this evening we're going to a community dinner at a Lebanese restaurant in the neighbourhood. The entertainment will include belly dancing.........

My Saturday few

Been a bit under the weather the last couple of days with whatever this stomach thing is going around. Had to miss Friday night dinner with a friend so I was determined not to miss Saturday night dinner with a group of regulars. Hostess picked German and dessert was my assignment.

Made a German Apple Cake and a Linzertorte. Both turned out okay. The Linzertorte had a piped lattice and I don't think I will try that again. I used some of my black raspberry jam in it instead of the more traditional red.

Also made some savory cheddar thumbprints filled with jalapeno jam. I discovered what a HUGH difference the jam makes. I used a different one than in the past and they weren't nearly as good.

Have a pot full of apples waiting to be turned into sauce.

Very, very excited as we have tickets to see Yo Yo Ma at the Kennedy Center tonight.

My Sunday fun

- Went to a pig roast last night. Lots of fun. Brought a huge platter of caprise salad on a stick. Looked pretty and fit the bill for easy to pick up.

- Made Sausage and Peppers in the crockpot on Friday night. I really do enjoy my crockpot more than I expected. I used Joe's method of steaming the sausages; then layered everything in the pot, put on just a bit of tom sauce. It was wonderful! Nice balance of tender sausage / but a lil crunchy.

- My Garage Sale find.... Krups Citrus Press - $2.50. I will have fun trying it out this week. Always fun to try something new. I love iced tea, so will be fun to use/try.

- Was walking and stopped by my neighbors, thought they were picking up rocks from their front lawn... Turns out they have a big pear tree. Who has a pear tree in NJ?? Anyway, she gave me some freshly picked, hard as a rock pears.... Now I feel pressure to make them a pear cobbler or something!

- Interesting dish served / devoured last night was a shrimp dish with glazed walnuts. The cook was impressed that I figured it all out, but I can't say that I enjoyed it. Somehow sugar / shrimp did not mix. He was quite proud of the rec. Ming rec.

- hhmmm Struggling for # 6. Ok, found one. I have decided that I do not like when someone shows up to a party with their own wine glass.... ie, did not want to drink from a red cup. She was at the pig feast, and happened to live next door. SO, she went back home and brought back this very expensive crystal glass for her to drink from... She would never be invited to a party here! : )

my sunday one

i fell going up the stairs last night and broke my left shoulder. a very unhappy camper here.

D@mn perogies have taken me TWO DAYS...that ought to count for at least 12!

They're for our "ethnic" potluck luncheon. I put myself down for Ukranian perogies and Yoguslavian nut horns, but I'm already exhausted and haven't yet plowed the fields, milked the cow, made the sauerkraut or taken pot shots at Bolsheviks. I didn't even manage to blanket the surface of the ironing board with perogies like Grandma used to do.

Nut horns may not make it past the proverbial Berlin Wall.

But I am wearing a bubushka.

Paper cups...

I am not a snob, but I must say that paper cups and me are not a good combination, unless they have some of that waxy coating. If it's a pure paper cup I get this odd feeling on my lips, hate the texture.

I don't mind plastic cups at all, though. In the very rare occasions that paper cups were offered at a get together, I discreetly wet the border with water, inside and out - that takes care of some of the discomfort.

Now, bringing a crystal glass to a get together, that is taking "snob" to the highest and most despicable level! smileys/wink.gif

Ouch! Oh my dear, you are going to find a myriad of things that your shoulder USED to do for

you without you ever knowing it.

My sympathies.

If my arms weren't so weak from peeling and dicing and paring and mashing and kneading and

rolling and cutting and pinching, pinching, pinching and then popping up EVERY SIX MINUTES to lift out of the boiling water, drain, saute, move to platter, drop in four more to boil...set timer for SIX MORE MINUTES...ad nauseum...I'd...
I'd...
...oh heck...I forgot what I was going to say now...

Why two days? What was the filling? Mine take 2 days only because I make the tater filling ahead

of time since I like to work with it cold. My gramma would save the bits of leftover mashed potatoes and use them mixed with cheese. I make fresh - I never have leftover taters and no freezer room to save them anyway.

The next day I make the dough, roll, cut, fill, pinch, boil and freeze.

Yep...caramelized the onions and made the potato, cheese, onion batch yesterday

Dough today...cooking today.. I may just pay the $10 next time.

I used a cookie scoop to get the filling the same size and they were a scootch too big because I had to seriously work the dough around each one. But proportion-wise, the amount of dough:filling was good. Very good.

I need to run out and buy more onions. Five weren't enough once they caramelized down to have enough to completely dress the platter.
