I was just wondering what really wonderful foods come from you r areas. New Jersey is much maligned,

No, it was East Windsor, near Princeton. And I lived in Hamilton Twp, near

the Burg as Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum called home (aka Trenton). It's always a treat to read her books because I know most of the streets in them...and the pizza parlors...and the bakeries...and the churches.

Pat, I order CA walnuts all the time. I get white English and Red...something.

Both work fine, but I prefer the English if I'm making candied walnuts as they look lighter.

I think the name of the farm is Haag. I'll check. Very reasonable, beautiful size, moist & meaty. They ship flat-rate box, so it doesn't kill you on postage. I think this last batch at Christmas was $5 a pound, shelled.

(Edited: I googled and it is Haag. Added link.)

I'll have to get down there for some great strawberries--all we get to recognize now are

scenes from The Soprano's.

And when I growing up in Hoboken scenes from "On The Waterfront" I couda bin a contenda.

I live in what was a walnut orchard; my aunt grew pecans; let's not forget Meyer Lemons...

I LOVE living in California - oh yeah, lots of cherries too - I recall us kids trying to out run one farmer on the way home from school with his shotgun of salt pellets - he had the *best* cherries, the smell of garlic, and one of my early jobs - at a winery...can you say free wine?!

Back in the day the air around here would be filled with the smells from the cannaries but that was back when we were called "The Valley of Hearts Delight" we're still a valley of course, it just now we're called Silly Con Valley smileys/wink.gif

I'll never forget my grandparents coming to visit when I was little refusing to eat that weird thing called an artichoke...too bad for them...more for me!!!

Pat mentioned most of what we are noted for but I must say we have lots of wonderful food here in California - including cheese/dairy too. It might be easier to list what we aren't noted for.

Some but commercially harvesting wild of abalone has been banned for about 10 yrs

but it is farmed so some places still offer it but it is $$$$$.

So very true....there's oranges, mandarins, and

other citrus; Tomales Bay Oysters; Dungeness crab; peaches, plums, prunes (a plum), cherries, pecans, walnuts, almonds, strawberries, tomatoes, sunflowers (seed, oil, feed), corn, dairy-oh my dairy!, rice, rice and more rice, artichokes (Castroville), and God only knows WHAT all else! Northern CA is a wealth of fresh fruits and veggies!

Last time I was going to drive up PCH, I looked up and found a restaurant... Morro Bay maybe?

The LUNCH of abalone was about $48... WHEW! Needless to day, we kept driving.

Charlie don't forget: Potato Knishes, Pizza (NJ is the best), Sausage & Peppers that are missed when

people leave NJ. I still say the best pizza is in NJ as is the Potato Knishes and Calzones and Strombolli ..... Now I'm making myself homesick again. NJ is also very famous for their FRESH SEA FOOD... We use to go crabbing down in Sea Side Park every summer. And the BAKERIES I miss my canoli's and Tiramisu.... and Drake Products and Wise Potato Chips..... I could go on and on... Italian Hero Sandwiches with cappacola...

$50 is about right, now if you can hold your breath...season opened 4/1 smileys/smile.gif

but the limit of no more than 3, 7" or bigger, and no scuba (or surface supplied air) used is strictly enforced.

Wait until after this summer if you do! We're showing signs of topping that record

setting heat wave back in the late seventies. We've set records for "high lows" almost all this week. It is not dropping to below eighty at night.

A friend has been diving and sharing his abalone. Oh my is it good stuff. It's $45-$60 per pound

when you can find it at higher end markets but I rarely see it available anymore.
