It's not until June, but is it ever too early to obsess about a menu? Jacques will be turning 60 (!)

and I've got him to agree to a big party by agreeing myself to a '60's theme. (He loved the 60's--all I remember is polyester and bad food. Remember Whip 'n Chill? I think it was made of polyester!)

I may even have agreed to dress as Sonny to his Cher, but I'm hoping that idea falls by the wayside as the months go by. (I drew the line at Barbarella.)

Anyway, I would like the food to look like 60's food, but taste wonderful. I've got a few ideas--ham balls, stuffed clams, chiffon cake. I'm resisting fondue because there will be at least 60 people and not much staff.

It has to be make-ahead. The party will be out in the back yard. I'll probably hire a couple of the kids from the store I teach at to serve.

Any ideas? We can go kinda French because the '60's for Jacques were all about Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsburg, but the food over there was still traditional then. Perhaps an emphasis on Saint-Tropez fare would work.

Thanks!

P.S. Marg, we may need those boots....

How do I find it.? I searched on "Sonny Bono" and "Whip 'N Chill" and came up blank.

Okay Baby. No boots here, just hot pants. I'd love to find that the suit came with me here.

I had those fabulous red suede, wedge-heeled, laced-to-the-knee-with red-suede-laces espadrilles.

Your backyard, as I mentioned, is such a visual for me. Even without my hot pants.

But as for the 60's, aaah, I was such a child of the 60s. Despite the exciting times, however, the food might just be really boring.

Lasagne for example. It came to its own on this side of the ocean, in the 60s, but are you sure your guests want to be reminded?

Why I think you've started planning in just the nick of time!

Not to rain on the nostalgia for 60's US food crap, but since his memory of 60's food is French, hell, play to your strengths and give him Mama's favorite homecooking and family favorites.

Oh Lordy Richard if you knew what a terrible cook Jacques' mother was! She was

cleanliness-obsessed and food was "messy." Not your typical French woman.

But I get your point and will consider a French theme.

Oh God, I almost spit my lunch out onto the screen!!! Laughing so hard a co-worker stopped by

to see what was so funny....

this is fun! Coke in cans, Pop Tarts, Taco Seasoning, Buffalo Wings, Tang. so much more

that was surprising to me.
