It's not until June, but is it ever too early to obsess about a menu? Jacques will be turning 60 (!)

You definitely need the Flaming Cabbage

When we owned our old fashioned diner/soda fountain I did a 60s hors d' party. The star of the show was something I found in an old Joy of Cooking; The Flaming Cabbage. This is my version:

Take a large cabbage, trim the bad leaves, trim the bottom to sit flat. Hollow out a place in the top of the cabbage that a small can of Sterno can fit into tightly. Then take bamboo skewers of different lengths and decide what tasty tidbits to impale on them- then stick the skewers all over the cabbage so it looks like Sputnik and light the Sterno. You can dress it all up with parsley or whatever- the idea is that people "grill" their own tidbits- I used tiny cocktail sausages, cheese cubes, olives, cherry tomatoes, bits of ham, pineapple. It is hysterical and everybody will LOVE it. Put out dipping sauces or crackers for the melted cheese- whatever.

"You definitely need the Flaming Cabbage." There is a sentence I could not have come up with myself!

What a great idea. Does the Sterno flavor the food? I've never thought to use it to cook food directly.

But then I;d have to do two. Can't they just cook their hors d'oeuvres on Jacques' head?

I also grew up on Pizza Mix in a box. My first real pizza was such a revelation! TV trays would be

great if I could find them. They could be used for serving since I'd never find enough for sitting, and I don't really want people sitting anyway. Jacques will likely want a dance floor.
