Paris recommendations...

"I say Toe-May-Toe and he says Toe-Ma-Toe". I say "Paris! and he says Yelapa!"

We compromised on spending the $$ putting up gutters for the whole house.

Here is some of my favorite foodie places in Paris plus other tidbits. If I can't go I have to live

vicariously through you.

Shopping:
G Detou- look for stuff written about this restaurant supply store on David Leibovitz's website. We get all sorts of dried mushrooms-morels, cepes, chanterelles for very reasonable prices. Also I love their almond paste which I take home, divide into 8 oz pieces and seal with the foodsaver.
Maille Mustards- this is another great place for little gifts. It is at place de la Madeleine. There are 32 different flavored Dijon mustard as well as the traditional plain. You can buy a little crock with a cork top which they will pump mustard into from a tap that is similar to a beer tap at a bar. They say to carry this on but the new regulations will confiscate it. What we did was take some duct tape and zip lock bags-taped the top and double bag it, and put it into the checked bags.

Lavinia-If you go to the Maille Mustard shop then a block down blvd Madeleine is the three story wine shop-Lavinia. There wines are reasonable priced and if you buy 6 bottles for 4 Euros you can have them box them for the plane. If anyone you know is like my husband and interested in Armagnac this is the place for you. There were vintage bottles back to 1908-all you need is money. There is also a little café which serves wines by the glass that are appropriate for each dish.

Musee Marmottan-One of our favorites for the Monets and the room to see them without tour groups moving between you and the painting you are viewing. Also in a house which feeds my imagination about how they lived. Notice I am only curious about rich people.

If you have a PDA you can get a free download of the Paris Metro program. With this program you can put in the start site and where you want to go and it will show you a route by both bus and subway. It is very cool. Let me know if you can't find it since my husband downloaded it I am not sure where it is.

Restaurants- I will just give you two suggestions from our last trip.

Friday- I am not sure how I heard about Le Baratin but I had heard it was a place that people don’t want to become known. It is also a small place which was full. It also was one of the few places that turned the tables. When we left at 10:30 people were waiting to be seated. The menu is written on a chalk board. Entrées were around 12€ and plats were around 20 €. Everything we saw go by looked wonderful. It isn’t a fancy place-more a down home kind of restaurant with a resident cat twining around your legs

Entrées-Artichaut poivrade en ragoût au citron (artichoke hearts in a lemon sauce)
Tartare de thon à la cerise (tuna tartare with fresh cherries-fabulous !)

Plats- Palette de porc rôti aux épices et légumes sauté (pork shoulder roasted with spices and served with sautéed vegetables-very good)
Guinea hen de Rouen roasted with mushrooms and sour cherries

Desserts- Marc de bois avec double crème (a kind of wild strawberry with a sour cream)
Fresh apricots poached in a vanilla syrup-fabulous!!

Wine- Domaine Gramenon Côtes-du-Rhone 2005

Le Baratin 3 rue Jouye Rouve 01 43 49 39 70 Metro-Pyrénées or Belleville (I had heard that this place was halfway up Belleville hill. So we took the metro to Pyrénées and walked down the hill to dinner and then after dinner walked the rest of the way down the hill to the Belleville stop.)

Sunday- It is difficult night to dine out in Paris which seems so strange to our American sensibilities. In past years we have relied upon L’Ardoise in the 1st which is very good. It was a time for a change though and we were very pleased to have found Pramil. It is a small chef owned bistro in the 3rd. It was a slow night which the chef said was usual. The menu was 29€ for Entrée, Plat et Dessert.

Entrées- Omelette aux asperges sauvages (Wild Asparagus Omelet)
Foie gras mi-cuit avec oreille de porc (A foie gras terrine with pork ears in a sweet sour sauce) with a 3€ supplement

Plat- Gigot de Sept Heures (lamb cooked for seven hours served with braised vegetables)

We spent more on wine than we did on dinner which was par for the course. We had a wonderful Riesling to start (Vendanges Tardives Riesling 1997 Domaine Julien Meyur) and a Pommard 2005 Les Cras with the plats. We had a lovely meal at Pramil and were lucky enough to talk to the chef afterwards.

Lavinia

Just a quick note about Lavinia....you can buy a bottle of wine in the store, then drink it at their upstairs restaurant/cafe without extra charge. Wines at Lavinia are a bit expensive, but this brings down the wine bill, not having to pay the extra resto charge. cheers, Bonnie

Also the Cluny museum...someone has probably mentioned it, already...
